CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After an unbeaten start to its 2024 season, the Harvard Crimson women's soccer program will continue the non-conference portion of its schedule tonight with a match against its cross-town rival, Northeastern Huskies. The Crimson (1-0-1, 0-0-0 Ivy) will put its unbeaten record on the line when it battles the Huskies (0-1-2, 0-0-0 CAA), who are looking for its first winning result of its season. The sides will meet for the 11
th time in program history when they take the pitch on Monday (Sep. 2) at 6:30 PM in Boston, Mass.
WHAT TO KNOW
Starting Strong
- Harvard opened its 2024 campaign with a win and a draw in its first two matches against Marshall and UMass, respectively.
- The Crimson did not concede a single goal over the two games, posting back-to-back shutouts.
- Goalkeeper, Rhiannon Stewart, recorded shutouts in both games, the first two of her career.
In the Rankings
- Harvard is one of only five teams in the nation that has not allowed a goal in 2024.
- The Crimson is averaging 19.5 shots per games, which ranks them no. 21 in the nation.
- Harvard has also averaged 8.5 corner kicks per game to rank no. 11 in the nation.
The Matchup
- Harvard will face off against Northeastern for the 11th time in program history. The Crimson own the advantage in the all-time series, 6-2-2.
- Under The Branca Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Soccer, Chris Hamblin, the Crimson is 3-2-0 against the Huskies and winners of the past two contests that took place in 2021 and 2022.
- Northeastern owns a record of 0-1-2 in its first three fixtures of the season.
- The Huskies are coming off a two-game West Coast road trip that saw them fall to San Jose State (L, 0-1) and draw against San Francisco (T, 1-1).
- The team's goalkeeper, Eliza Teplow, has been busy in her three starts this season, facing 17 shots and making 14 saves in three matches.
- Northeastern has allowed 46 shots in total in 2024 for an opponent average of 15.3 shots per game.
On the Road
- Harvard has held its own in matches away from Jordan Field, posting a 21-5-6 record in road contests since 2019.
- This will be the second of Harvard's 10 away fixtures, which is the most in program history.
Preseason Award and Accolades
- The Crimson landed in the top spot on the Ivy League Preseason media poll, taking first place with 120 votes and 10 first-place votes.
- Josefine Hasbo and Jade Rose were named to the Midfielder and Defenders to watch lists by the United Soccer Coaches.
- The duo also landed on the annual Top Drawer Soccer Preseason Top 100 player list last week ahead of their senior seasons. Josie claimed the No. 27 spot while Jade was ranked at 62nd on the list.
- Harvard came in to the 2024 season ranked No. 19 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer. Harvard was ranked as high as No. 17 in the poll a year ago.
- Harvard women's soccer was recently ranked inside Soccer Wire's National Top 50 Programs over the past five seasons. The Crimson came in at No. 46 on the list that takes into account national rankings and achievements dating back to the start of the 2020 season. The recognition is a testament to the rapid growth the program has experience under Coach Hamblin and his staff, who are seeking its fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2024.
