PRINCETON, N.J. – For the third consecutive week, Harvard women's soccer swept the Ivy League's weekly awards as senior
Áslaug Gunnlaugsdóttir and junior
Rhiannon Stewart were named the league's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively. The duo was excellent in the team's 2-2 draw at Santa Clara on Sunday (Sep. 22), helping the team move to 4-0-4 on the year and complete an unbeaten non-conference record.
An Iceland native, Gunnlaugsdóttir returned to the pitch for the Crimson in a big way on Sunday, recording her second career brace with two goals against the No. 10 Broncos. The senior midfielder scored both of her goals while the team was trailing, the second coming at the 86' mark in the contest to help the Crimson get the result. For her efforts, Gunnlaugsdóttir was named the Ivy League's Offensive Player of the Week.
Gunnlaugsdóttir's last goal for the Crimson came 736 days earlier, when she helped the team come away with a 2-2 tie at No. 17 TCU. After missing the 2023 season due to injury, Gunnlaugsdóttir burst back onto the scene to repeat history and score a brace to help the Crimson remain unbeaten against the No. 10 Broncos.
This was the second Ivy League weekly honor for Gunnlaugsdóttir, the first coming during the 2022 season.
Continuing her strong play between the posts,
Rhiannon Stewart was once again honored as the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Week award after recording nine saves against No. 10 Santa Clara. The total is now a new career-high for Stewart, who has now set career bests in each of her last four starts.
This is Stewart's second weekly honor of the season and the second of her career. The junior goalkeeper has started every match and played every minute for the Crimson and is up to 38 total saves on the season.
