TUCSON, Ariz. – Harvard Men's Swimming and Diving secured a 178-122 road win at Arizona on Friday. The victory at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center moved the Crimson to 4-0 on the season, while the Wildcats, who were receiving votes in the latest CSCAA Top 25 Poll, dropped to 2-4.
What to Know
- On an afternoon that saw Harvard win 10 events, none was more memorable than David Schmitt's performance in the 200 butterfly. The sophomore broke his own school record of 1:42.17, with a winning time of 1:41.25, which was more than two seconds faster than his previous season best (1:43.72). Schmitt also won the 100 fly, posting a time of 45.99 to move from sixth all-time at Harvard to third.
- Anthony Rincon enjoyed a nice afternoon in the desert, swimming the opening leg of the winning 200 medley relay (season-best 1:25.25) before capturing the 100 back (season-best 46.38) and 200 back (1:41.52). The senior's 100-back time ranks third all-time at Harvard.
- Joshua Chen swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay and then won a pair of events as the day went along. The first-year entered the Crimson's all-time 100-breast list, registering the fourth-fastest time in school history at 53.62. In the 200 breast, Chen moved from 10th to seventh at Harvard with a time of 1:56.99. Both times were the best in the field today.
- Sophomore Sonny Wang emerged victorious in the 50 free, finishing in 19.64. He was the only athlete on the day to break 20 seconds and nearly equaled his personal best of 19.61.
- Senior Adam Wesson won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 347.70. He later was the runner-up at three meters (367.73).
- First-year Adriano Arioti was the top performer in the 200 individual medley, posting a time of 1:47.89. He led a Crimson sweep of the top-3 spots as classmates Eric Lee (1:48.86) and Richard Poplawski III (season-best 1:48.93) finished in second and third, respectively.
- With the win over Arizona, Harvard is now 6-0 all-time vs. current members of the Big 12 Conference (1-0 vs. Arizona, 2-0 vs. Arizona State, 1-0 vs. BYU, 1-0 vs. Kansas, 1-0 vs. Utah).
