Elias Soulé came in sixth place in the men's freestyle sprint as Harvard University skiing opened up its 2025 season on day one of the Bates Carnival on Friday.
In alpine competition at Sunday River, Armstrong led the Crimson with his fifth-place finish in the giant slalom in his first collegiate competition while senior
Matt Ryan joined him as a top-30 finisher with a 27
th-place showing.
In nordic action at Black Mountain, Soulé paced Harvard behind his sixth-place finish in the men's 1.3k freestyle sprint in his collegiate debut, while the Crimson's women's nordic team tallied three top-30 finishers – senior

th), and senior
Tali Wong (25
th). Donley advanced to the semifinals while McJunkin and Wong both reached the quarterfinals.
In the team standings, the Crimson stands in eighth place (185 points) out of 14 schools through the first day of the two-day carnival.
Harvard will close competition at the Bates Carnival tomorrow – Saturday, Jan. 11 – with alpine competing in the slalom and nordic taking part in the 15k freestyle interval start.
Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1
- Making his collegiate debut, first-year Duncan Armstrong placed fifth in the men's giant slalom behind a time of 2:29.43, collecting 39 EISA points and 45 NCAA points. He posted a 1:15.62 in run one and a 1:13.81 in run two.
- Senior Matt Ryan joined Armstrong as a top-30 finisher, coming in 27th with a time of 2:33.46. He notched a 1:18.08 in run one and 1:15.38 in run two, totaling 18 EISA points and four NCAA points.
- Harvard's men's alpine contingent came in fifth place in the team standings in the giant slalom with 65 points.
Harvard Highlights: Nordic Day 1
- First-year Elias Soulé posted a sixth-place finish in the men's 1.3k freestyle sprint in his collegiate debut, registering 37 EISA points and 40 NCAA points. Soulé came in second in the qualifier (2:33.80) to advance to the quarterfinals where he won quarterfinal four (2:33.22). Soule came in third in semifinal two (2:30.11) before finishing sixth in the final (3:05.03).
- Senior Quincy Donley led the women's side in the women's 1.3k freestyle sprint, placing 10th and tallying 30 EISA points and 26 NCAA points. Donley came in eighth in the qualifier (3:03.65) prior to finishing third in quarterfinal five (2:53.99). In semifinal two, Donley came in fifth (3:00.07) to close out her day.
- Junior Hayden McJunkin recorded an 18th-place finish in the women's freestyle sprint, posting 24 EISA points and 13 NCAA points. After taking 22nd in the qualifier (3:12.26), she came in fourth in quarterfinal four (3:02.23).
- Senior Tali Wong came in 25th in the women's freestyle sprint, notching 18 EISA points and six NCAA points. Following a 27th-place showing in the qualifier (3:12.81), she came in fifth in quarterfinal two (2:58.04).
- Harvard's women's nordic contingent came in fifth place in the team standings in the freestyle sprint with 72 points.
