Skiing Continues Competition at the St. Lawrence Carnival

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – First-year Skylar Sheppard came in eighth in women's slalom, first-year Duncan Armstrong finished 14th in men's slalom, senior Quincy Donley placed 18th in the women's 20k freestyle, and first-year Elias Soulé took 19th in the men's 20k freestyle as Harvard University skiing continued competition on day two of the St. Lawrence Carnival on Friday.
 
In alpine action at Whiteface Mountain, the Crimson tallied three top-30 finishes in the slalom on day two behind efforts from Sheppard (eighth, women's slalom), Armstrong (14th, men's slalom), and senior Matt Ryan (24th, men's slalom). For the weekend, Sheppard placed in the top 18 of both events while Armstrong finished in the top 14 of both races.
 
In the first day of nordic competition at Mt. Van Hoevenberg, senior Quincy Donley (18th place) and junior Hayden McJunkin (25th) paced the Crimson in the women's 20k freestyle while first-year Elias Soulé (19th place) led the men's side in the 20k freestyle.
 
As a team, Harvard stands in eighth place out of 14 EISA schools with 253 points through the first two days of the three-day carnival.
 
Harvard will close competition at the St. Lawrence Carnival tomorrow – Saturday, Jan. 18 – with nordic competing in the 7.5k classic interval start. 

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 2 (Friday)

  • First-year Skylar Sheppard led Harvard with an eighth-place finish in women's slalom behind a time of 1:37.69 (47.41 run one, 50.28 run two) for 33 EISA points and 32 NCAA points. She posted her second top-18 finish of the weekend and third top-18 effort of the season.
  • First-year Duncan Armstrong came in 14th place in men's slalom to lead the Crimson's men's contingent with a time of 1:34.89 (49.85 run one, 45.04 run two), collecting 27 EISA points and 18 NCAA points. He posted his second top-14 finish of the weekend and third top-14 showing of the year.
  • Senior Matt Ryan placed 24th in men's slalom with a time of 1:35.57 (49.51 run one, 46.06 run two), tallying 21 EISA points and seven NCAA points. He registered his second top-30 finish of the season. 

Harvard Highlights: Nordic Day 1 (Friday)

  • Senior Quincy Donley paced the Crimson in the women's 20k freestyle event, placing 18th with a time of 56:21.80, while tallying 26 EISA points and 13 NCAA points. She notched her second top-20 finish of the season after coming in 10th in the freestyle sprint at the Bates Carnival.
  • Junior Hayden McJunkin finished 25th in the women's 20k freestyle with a time of 58:17.00 for 23 EISA points and six NCAA points. She posted her second top-25 showing of the year after coming in 18th in the freestyle sprint at the Bates Carnival.
  • First-year Elias Soulé led Harvard in the men's 20k freestyle with a 19th-place finish and time of 49:12.10, registering 24 EISA points and 14 NCAA points. He recorded his second top-20 effort of the year after taking sixth in the freestyle sprint at the Bates Carnival.
  • The Crimson's women's nordic contingent placed sixth as a team in the women's 20k freestyle event with 64 points. 

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1 (Thursday)

  • First-year Duncan Armstrong placed 10th in the men's giant slalom behind a 2:11.50 (1:04.77 run one, 1:06.73 run two), tallying 30 EISA points and 26 NCAA points. He notched his second top-10 finish in three races this season after placing fifth in the giant slalom at the Bates Carnival last weekend.
  • First-year Skylar Sheppard came in 18th in the women's giant slalom with a time of 2:17.53 (1:08.00 run one, 1:09.53 run two), totaling 22 EISA points and 13 NCAA points. In run two, Sheppard posted a top-10 time. She registered her second top-20 effort of the year after taking 13th in the slalom at the Bates Carnival a weekend ago.

For its next carnival, Harvard will compete at the St. Michael's Carnival from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1 with alpine events at Smugglers' Notch in Jeffersonville, Vermont and nordic events at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington, Vermont.
