CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the first and only time this season, Crimson fans will have a chance to see reigning national champion Harvard fencing live and in person on Saturday, Feb. 1 at Gordon Indoor Track. Both the men's and women's teams will face Duke and New York University, as fencing begins at 3:30 p.m. All the action will stream live on ESPN+.
WHAT TO KNOW:
- Last weekend saw several Crimson fencers, both current and former, enjoy success at international tournaments.
- At the Men's Saber World Cup in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, first-year and 2024 Paris Olympian Colin Heathcock finished in sixth place, fellow Olympian Mitchell Saron '23 finished in 35th place. The two joined forces in the team portion, helping the United States take fifth place.
- The Epee Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar saw first-years Nicholas Zhang and Sarah Gu take part in the Epee Grand Prix. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Zhang finished in 16th place, just one of two teenagers to finish in the top-20 at the competition. Gu finished in 81st place.
- After a trio of meets, both Crimson squads own 9-4 records on the season.
- In its last collegiate competition, Harvard traveled to the Empire State, facing off against some of the top competition in the country at the St. John's Invitational.
- Both the women's and men's teams earned victories against Ohio State and tournament host St. John's.
- Across all four matches, senior and team captain Lauren Scruggs and Gu each recorded a team-high eight wins at the St. John's Invitational.
- An All-America First Team selection last season, sophomore and team captain Henry Lawson led the men's team with nine wins at the St. John's Invitational.
- Head coach Daria Schneider is in her sixth season at the helm of the Harvard fencing program. In 2024, Schneider led Harvard to its first national championship since 2006, as she also became the first female head coach to win an NCAA fencing national championship.
