Skiing Opens 2025 Season at Bates Carnival

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University skiing will open its 2025 season at the Bates Carnival from Jan. 10-11 with alpine events at Sunday River in Newry, Maine and nordic competition at Black Mountain in Rumford, Maine. 

What to Know

  • Friday's competition will feature the giant slalom on the alpine side and the 1.3k freestyle on the nordic side while Saturday's action will include the slalom on the alpine side and the 15k freestyle interval start on the nordic side.
  • The Bates Carnival last took place during the 2023 season with the Crimson coming in sixth place as a team at the event. In the men's giant slalom, the Crimson's contingent came in fourth place as a team.
  • Harvard brings back 12 student-athletes from last season, including alpine senior Matt Ryan and nordic seniors Quincy Donley and Tali Wong.
  • Senior Matt Ryan will captain this year's alpine team while senior Quincy Donley will serve as the captain for the nordic side. The Crimson's men's alpine Team MVP last season, Ryan qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2022. Harvard's women's nordic Team MVP a season ago, Donley will act as a team captain for the second straight season.
  • Harvard's roster features 20 total skiers with 10 student-athletes each on the alpine and nordic teams. The Crimson's roster includes three seniors, three juniors, six sophomores, and eight first-years.
  • This past fall nordic skiing alumnus Rémi Drolet '24 earned recognition as an NCAA Today's Top 10 honoree for his exceptional accomplishments in competition, in the classroom, and in the community. A 2022 Olympian for Team Canada, Drolet concluded his time with the Crimson as a three-time All-American, two-time CSC Academic All-American, three-time NCAA qualifier, and 2023 NCAA Champion.
  • Harvard has qualified skiers on both the alpine and nordic sides for the NCAA Championships in each of the last four competitive seasons.
  • Scott MacPherson – The Peter H. Carter '69 Head Coach for Harvard Alpine Skiing – stands in his eighth season at the helm of the alpine program in 2024-25. While at Harvard, MacPherson has twice earned EISA Coach of the Year honors (2019-20, 2022-23).
  • Cate Brams – The Paul J. Finnegan Family Head Coach for Harvard Nordic Skiing – enters their first season as the leader of the Crimson's nordic program.
  • Alongside returning alpine assistant coach Cameron Ciccone, Harvard welcomes three new assistant coaches to its coaching staff this winter, including Fredi Schneider on the alpine team as well as Devin Wong and Meg Yoder on the nordic side.

Harvard will compete at the St. Lawrence Carnival from Jan. 16-18 with alpine events at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, New York from Jan. 16-17 and nordic events at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid from Jan. 17-18.
