Sailing Captures Stu Nelson Trophy, Finishes Second at Open ACC – Round 1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing emerged victorious at the Stu Nelson Trophy and came in second place at the Open Atlantic Coast Championship – Round 1 this past weekend in New London, Connecticut. The Crimson also finished in 12th at the Sister Ester Trophy in Newport, Rhode island.

Stu Nelson Trophy | New London, Conn.

Harvard was excellent on the Thames River, with only one race producing a finish outside the top seven. Zoey Ziskind and Hanah Youn competed in the A-division and they came in 13th place in Race 1. After that, it was an impressive showing, putting up a final line of 1-1-6-1-4-2 to finish with an A-division-best score of 28. Kate Danielson and JJ Drummond were the top pairing in the B-division, settling in after a 7-6 start to finish 2-2-2-1-2. The duo ended with a 22. Over in the C-division, Sophia Montgomery and Christina Chen were even better than their teammates, registering a 14, which was buoyed by five first-place efforts. Their final line was 1-1-3-6-1-1-1. The Crimson won the regatta with a 64, finishing ahead of runner-up Stanford (104).

Open Atlantic Coast Championship – Round 1 | New London, Conn.

A shortage of wind limited sailors to just eight races – three on Saturday and five on Sunday. Harvard's A-grouping of Justin Callahan and Jacob Posner finished with the top score (22) in their division. The tandem won its first three races before a fifth-place showing paused their momentum. They ended up winning Race 5 and closed the regatta with a 3-3-7. Mitchell Callahan and Rosella Irfan, meanwhile, had seven top-8 performances and ended the two-day event by winning Race 8, to finish with a 44 (8-10-4-5-2-7-7-1). The Crimson's final score of 66 trailed only Brown and its 57.

Sister Ester Trophy | Newport, R.I.

Wind was scarce on Mt. Hope Bay, so scarce that only four races were contested. Theresa Straw and Grace Naylor had the A-division assignment and registered a finish line of 9-13-9-12 to post a 43. Caroline Straw and Skyler Reading, meanwhile, turned in a 45 (8-11-13-13). Harvard's regatta score of 88 was tied with Yale for 11th, but the Crimson took 12th place due to the number of high-place finishes (7). Boston College won the trophy with a 26.

Up Next

Harvard will play host to the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship – Final and head to the Captain Hurst Bowl in Hanover, New Hampshire. Both regattas are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11-Sunday, Oct. 12.
