Meek Wins Open Singlehanded National Title; Montgomery, Danielson Finish in Women’s Top 10

NORFOLK, Va. – Harvard Sailing junior Robby Meek won the 2025 ICSA Open Singlehanded National Championship on Sunday. Sophia Montgomery and Kate Danielson, meanwhile, finished in third and ninth place, respectively, at the women's regatta.

A lack of wind was an issue the entire weekend and limited sailors to just two races on Saturday. Meek was head-and-shoulders above the field on Day 1, finishing in first place in both races to post a score of 2 heading into Sunday. Montgomery went 1-3 to end Saturday in second place, while Danielson logged a two-race line of 14-2.

Sunday allowed for more racing, which allowed Meek to continue his impressive showing. The junior finished in first place in Race 3, 5 and 6, and took second (Race 4) and third (Race 7) in the others to post a 7-race score of 10. Meek's 10 was well clear of runner-up Hamilton Barclay of Tulane, who registered a 34.

On the women's side, Montgomery was solid on Day 2, with five top-9 performances (5-3-7-9-9), but it was not enough to defend her title from 2024. Danielson, who was making her second appearance in as many seasons (fourth as a first-year in 2024), started and closed on strong notes, coming in fourth in the opener (Race 3) before finishing with a runner-up effort in Race 7. A 14-10-14 run in between Race 3 and 7 prevented her from placing higher.

Meek's crown marked the fourth time a Crimson sailor captured the open title and was Harvard's first since Henry Marshall in 2018. Robert Doyle (1970) and Vincent Porter (2004) were the other two victors at the open event. In three seasons, Meek has won finished fourth (2023), eighth (2024) and now first (2025).

Montgomery closed her Harvard singlehanded career with a fourth top-4 showing. The senior began her time with the Crimson with a fourth-placing performance in 2021 (first-year), won the event in 2022 (sophomore), took 2023 off to train for the Paris Olympics, and won the 2024 title (junior) before this season's third-place finish.

Harvard returns to action on this weekend, when it competes at the ICSA Match Race National Championship in St. Petersburg, Florida. The regatta is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15-Sunday, Nov. 16.
