CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Over the course of the fall semester, all Harvard softball student-athletes and coaches spent an evening in South Boston, volunteering at Andrea Muccini's Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center. What began as a simple community outreach idea quickly grew into a meaningful and energetic partnership.
Andrea Muccini's Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center in South Boston is a community-driven training space dedicated to building confidence, discipline, and strength in athletes of all ages. For more than two decades, the Andrea Muccini Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center has stood as a cornerstone of the South Boston community. As the longest-running community dojo in the area, the center has built its reputation on empowerment, discipline, and meaningful connection.
What began humbly, with just one student, one instructor, and one martial arts discipline, has grown into a vibrant and multifaceted training space. Today, the center offers three distinct martial arts disciplines, a variety of fitness programs, youth and community classes, and a calendar full of events designed to bring people together.
Each week, Harvard softball student-athletes and coaches stepped in to help lead drills, hold pads, demonstrate techniques, and support the young athletes who train at the center. The sessions were filled with laughter, encouragement, and plenty of high-energy moments as the kids worked hard and bonded with the players.
For the Harvard softball student-athletes, the experience was just as rewarding. Volunteering gave them the chance to connect with the local community, serve as mentors, and inspire the next generation of young competitors.
"Volunteering at the dojo was such a blast! I loved getting to run around with the kids, sit on my dot next to them, and watch them light up while learning from Sensei Andrea," senior pitcher
Riley Flynn said. "Seeing how much she cares for them made the whole experience even more special!"
"HSB has been showing up for our inner-city community for over 15 years—and we're wicked lucky! A huge shoutout to the "wicked smaaaht" and super-athletic Harvard University softball players who bring their brains, biceps, and big smiles to mentor our young people," Andrea Muccini, owner of Andrea Muccini's Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center said. "Our kids absolutely adore them, and we couldn't be more grateful for the heart and hustle they bring every time!"
"Volunteering at karate class throughout the fall semester with Andrea Muccini's Ultimate Self Defense & Performance Center Ultimate Self Defense has truly been one of the highlights of our year," head coach
Jenny Rohn said. "Harvard Softball is incredibly fortunate to be part of the Ultimate Self Defense/South Boston community and to give back in a small way. Most importantly, we are deeply grateful to owner and operator, Andrea Muccini, for welcoming HSB back year after year and for creating such a positive, empowering space for young athletes to grow. KIAI!"
Harvard Softball is grateful for the opportunity to represent the program in such a positive space, and we extend a heartfelt thank you to Andrea Muccini for welcoming us into her center throughout the fall. We look forward to continuing this partnership and supporting the growth, confidence, and empowerment of young athletes in Boston.
