Skiing Opens Competition at UNH Carnival, NCAA Regionals

FRANCONIA, N.H. and JACKSON, N.H. – First-year Duncan Armstrong came in eighth place in the men's giant slalom, and senior Quincy Donley placed 20th in the women's 7.5k classic as Harvard University skiing opened competition on day one of the New Hampshire Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships on Friday.
 
In alpine action at Mittersill, Armstrong led the Crimson with his eighth-place finish in the men's giant slalom, posting his seventh top-10 effort of the year, while junior Luke Kearing supported him with a 25th-place finish in men's giant slalom, notching his fifth top-30 showing of the year.
 
In nordic competition at Jackson XC, the Crimson tallied three top-30 finishers in the women's 7.5k classic behind Donley (20th), sophomore Clara Lake (27th), and sophomore Breagh Bridge (29th). Donley notched her seventh top-20 effort of the year.
 
As a team, Harvard stands in a tie for ninth place out of 14 EISA schools with 153 points.
 
Harvard will close competition at the UNH Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 22 – with alpine competing in the slalom and nordic taking part in the 15k freestyle.

Harvard Highlights: Alpine Day 1

  • First-year Duncan Armstrong paced the Crimson with an eighth-place finish in men's giant slalom, posting his seventh top-10 effort on the year. Armstrong finished fifth in run one, clocked a 2:14.56 (1:09.28 run one, 1:05.28 run two) for 33 EISA points as well as 32 NCAA points, and registered his ninth top-30 showing on the season.
  • Junior Luke Kearing came in 25th in the men's giant slalom, recording his fifth top-30 finish on the season. He charted a 2:17.41 (1:12.10 run one, 1:05.31 run two), including a 19th-place effort in run two, for 17 EISA points and six NCAA points.
  • Harvard's men's contingent came in sixth place as a team in the men's giant slalom with 65 points, trailing fifth-place St. Lawrence (66 points) by just one point.

  • Senior Quincy Donley led the Crimson with a 20th-place finish in the women's 7.5 classic, clocking a 23:06.70 for 24 EISA points and 11 NCAA points. She tallied her seventh top-20 finish of the season.
  • Sophomore Clara Lake placed a season-best 27th in the women's 7.5k classic behind a 23:49.10 for 19 EISA points and four NCAA points.
  • Sophomore Breagh Bridge posted her third top-30 finish of the season, coming in 29th in the women's 7.5k classic with a 23:56.20 for 18 EISA points and two NCAA points.
  • Harvard's women's contingent came in sixth place as a team in the women's 7.5k classic with 61 points.

Next Up

Harvard will close competition at the UNH Carnival and NCAA Regional Championships tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 22 – with alpine competing in the slalom and nordic taking part in the 15k freestyle.
 
Harvard will look to send representatives to the NCAA Championships hosted by Dartmouth College from March 5-8 with alpine events at the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, New Hampshire and nordic events at Oak Hill in Hanover, New Hampshire. The championship's schedule of events will include giant slalom on March 5, the 7.5k classic on March 6, slalom on March 7, and the 20k freestyle on March 8.  The NCAA will announce selections for the championship on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
