CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – At the second day of the 2025 Mizuno Showdown, Harvard softball fell short against tournament host North Carolina and Saint Joseph's.
In the first meeting between the Crimson and Tar Heels since 2018, the hosts earned the win, 7-1. Harvard closed the day with a rematch against the Hawks, as Saint Joseph's pulled away, 9-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME ONE:
North Carolina (16-3, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) built a three-run lead across the first two frames of the contest. After a scoreless third inning, Harvard (5-3, 0-0 Ivy League) battled back in the fourth inning.
On a 2-0 count, senior outfielder and team captain
Savannah Fitzpatrick provided the Crimson a leadoff baserunner with a hit by pitch. Sophomore infielder
Sophie Sun pounced on a pitch early in the count, drilling a ball to the left corner of the outfielder, scoring Fitzpatrick.
With a 3-1 scoreline heading into the bottom of the fourth, junior pitcher
Ryan Grace kept the Crimson within reach with key pitching out of the bullpen. With the bases loaded, Grace recorded one out on one pitch with a popout, as the inning ended with a North Carolina groundout to Sun at shortstop.
The sixth inning saw North Carolina pull away, as a three-run home run extended the host's lead, 7-1.
Harvard tallied one run on four hits against the Tar Heels, as Sun led the way with a pair of hits. Fitzpatrick and junior outfielder
Lael Ayala both added hits as well.
HOW IT HAPPENED IN GAME TWO:
In a rematch of yesterday's thrilling contest, Saint Joseph's (7-6, 0-0 Atlantic-10) built an early lead, scoring five runs in the opening frame.
The third inning saw the Crimson offense put traffic on the base paths. After picking up a hit in the opener against North Carolina, Ayala added another hit, slashing a single past third base. A walk from sophomore outfielder
Audrey Szollosi put a runner in scoring position with one out, but the Hawks ended the inning with a double play.
Across the fourth and fifth innings, Saint Joseph's scored four runs to end the game. Sun, Ayala, and first-year catcher
Quinn Salazar-Stewart all ended the contest with hits.
