Sailing Posts Pair of Top-3 Results

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing registered two top-3 results across two regattas this past weekend. The top-ranked coed team finished with the second-best record, but ultimately finished in third place at the Graham Hall Trophy Team Race, while the No. 8 women's squad was the runner-up at the Women's Southern New England Team Race.

Graham Hall Trophy Team Race | Annapolis, Md.

Harvard and the rest of the field experienced up-and-down conditions over two days on the Severn River. Saturday started fine, but slowed as the day progressed. The wind picked up on Sunday, but accelerated to the point where sailing had to be stopped. It eventually resumed only for the wind to increase toward the end of the day, causing some challenging conditions.

The Crimson finished with a record of 13-2, along with Georgetown, but took third due to tiebreaking rules. Harvard and the Hoyas were both looking up at the hosts, Navy, who went 14-1. Representing the Crimson were skippers Justin Callahan, Harrison Strom, Mitchell Callahan and Robby Meek, and crew Kennedy Leehealey, Alexandra Dorofeev, Xavier Ayala-Vermont, Rosella Irfan, Aidan Pesce, Christina Chen and Strom, who pulled double duty.

Harvard opened with an impressive 6-0 record, with the first three decisions vs. Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Cornell and Wisconsin coming by way of 1-2-3 performances. Navy halted the Crimson's momentum briefly, winning 1-4-5, only to see the Crimson respond with seven straight victories, including 1-2-3 showings vs. U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, College of Charleston, Old Dominion and Yale. Harvard, however, lost a head-to-head matchup with Georgetown, 1-5-6, which proved to be the difference in the final team standings.

Women's Southern New England Team Race | New London, Conn.

Sailors who competed on the Thames River showed their resilience by patiently waiting for the wind to pick up on Saturday only for the fog to roll in. The breeze increased, allowing for more sailing before the action was called. On Sunday, the conditions were great, with the wind picking up toward the end of the competition.

The Crimson finished in a second-place tie with MIT as the Cambridge neighbors posted identical 11-4 records. Harvard received the second-place nod thanks to tiebreaker rules. Both teams, however, were two victories shy of regatta winner, Brown, which was 13-2 over the course of two days.

Kate Danielson, Cordelia Burn and Zoey Ziskind led the way for the Crimson, with Amelie Zucker, Peyton Hadfield, Theresa Straw and Katherine Shin serving as crew.

Harvard opened the competition with a 1-2-5 decision over U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a 1-3-5 showing vs. Tufts, but suffered back-to-back losses to Boston College (3-4-5) and Brown (4-5-6). The Crimson, however, finished Round 1 on a winning note, taking down MIT, 1-3-5.

Round 2 started with another victory, this time a 1-2-6 effort vs. U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Harvard built on that momentum with wins over Tufts (1-2-5) and BC (1-2-5) only to have it paused after falling to Brown, 3-4-6. Similar to Round 1, the Crimson finished off the second round-robin with a 1-2-5 triumph over MIT.

The Round-2 victory over MIT springboarded Harvard to four straight wins to open the third and final round. The Crimson took down in order U.S. Coast Guard (1-2-5), Tufts (1-2-5), Boston College (1-2-5) and Brown (1-3-5). Harvard, however, could not complete the sweep, dropping a decision to MIT, 1-5-6, to finish off the regatta.

Up Next

Harvard will compete at the Friis Trophy Team Race in New London and appear at Tufts' Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race, which will take place on the Charles River. Both regattas will run from March 22-23.
