GREENVILLE, S.C. – Senior
George Cooper went 2-for-4 with a three-run double, but Harvard University baseball fell to Michigan State University, 13-3, in seven innings in the series finale of a three-game set on Sunday afternoon at Fluor Field.
Closing out a five-game stretch of games against Big Ten opponents and playing in the fifth game of an eight-game streak against Power Four conference teams, the Crimson (0-6) tallied three runs in the fifth inning after the Spartans (9-1) plated the game's first 12 runs before MSU closed out the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Cooper hit a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth for his first double of the season while sophomore right-hander
Will Burns tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, permitting no runs on no hits with four strikeouts.
Harvard Highlights
- Senior George Cooper went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double – his first of the season. He notched a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth.
- First-year Gavin Smith, senior William Lybrook, and senior Matt Giberti each tallied one hit and one run. Lybrook also worked a walk.
- Sophomore Jack Rickheim added a hit alongside a diving grab at shortstop in the bottom of the fourth.
- Sophomore right-hander Will Burns tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief, permitting no runs on no hits with four strikeouts.
- Making his first collegiate start on the mound, junior right-hander Gio Colasante tallied two strikeouts over 2.1 innings.
How It Happened
- Michigan State opened the game's scoring with four runs in the bottom of the first behind a pair of home runs.
- The Spartans increased their advantage to 8-0 with a grand slam in the bottom of the third.
- The designated hosts of MSU added four more runs in the last of the fifth to move ahead 12-0.
- The Crimson countered with three runs in the top of the fifth to pull within 12-3. After senior William Lybrook walked, both Smith and Giberti notched base hits to load the bases. Cooper then sent a 3-2 pitch to center field to hit a bases-clearing double.
- Michigan State closed the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
