Cooper Homers, Baseball Falls to Penn in Series Finale, 14-4

PHILADELPHIA – Junior Gio Colasante tallied three hits at the plate alongside four strikeouts on the mound, and senior George Cooper hit his second home run of the season, but Harvard University baseball fell to the University of Pennsylvania, 14-4, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium.
 
Closing out its first Ivy League series of the season, the Crimson (0-16, 0-3 Ivy) remained within 6-4 entering the seventh inning before the host Quakers (8-9, 3-0 Ivy) plated the contest's final eight runs.
 
Colasante – the game's starting pitcher – went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and a double, while tossing 2.0 innings on the hill, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Cooper launched his eighth career home run, and seniors Sawyer Feller and Matt Giberti each contributed two hits. 

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior Gio Colasante went 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs and a double. He notched a season-high three hits, posted multi-hit games in all three contests of the series, and has now recorded multiple hits in five of his last six games.
  • As the starter on the mound, Colasante tossed 2.0 innings, allowing one run on two hits and no walks with a season-high four strikeouts.
  • Senior George Cooper launched his second home run of the year and the eighth homer of his career.
  • Senior Sawyer Feller finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Senior Matt Giberti contributed a 2-for-4 effort.
  • First-year Liam Wilson notched his third double of the season.
  • Senior William Lybrook added an RBI and a run scored, and junior Max Lane tacked on an RBI and a walk.
  • As a team, Harvard registered nine hits at the plate, tying its second-highest total of the season.

How It Happened

  • The Quakers opened the game's scoring with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single.
  • Harvard knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the second as Feller hit an RBI single to right center field.
  • The Crimson moved ahead 3-1 in the top of the third behind a pair of runs. Cooper started the frame's scoring with a solo home run to left center before a ground ball from Lybrook brought in the stanza's second run.
  • Penn tied the game at 3-3 in the last of the third with a two-run single.
  • The hosts staked themselves to a 6-3 advantage in the bottom of the fourth with three runs.
  • Lane brought in a run for the Crimson with an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 6-4.
  • The Quakers extended their margin to 11-4 with five runs in the last of the seventh and to 14-4 in the bottom of the eighth with three additional runs.
