Friis Trophy Team Race | New London, Conn.
Perfect conditions were on hand for the 64
th running of the Friis Trophy. Saturday brought winds from the southwest between 6-14 knots, with a round-robin contested between all 10 teams before a bottom-4 was sailed. Sunday, meanwhile, featured a top-8 knockout round, which was held to determine final placings.
The Crimson opened with five straight victories, taking down Roger Williams (1-2-6), College of Charleston (1-2-4), Brown (1-2-5), Rhode Island (1-3-4) and Stanford (1-2-3), before experiencing a hiccup with a 2-4-5 loss to Boston College. The snag was short-lived as Harvard got back on track with a defeat of U.S. Coast Guard Academy (2-3-4), Vermont (1-2-3) and Tufts (1-2-5) to close out the day with an 8-1 record.
When final-day action rolled around, Harvard, which was the second-seeded team in the field, delivered No. 7-seed Brown a 2-0 decision (1-2-3, 1-2-4), setting up a date with the Cardinal. Stanford eventually came out on top, 1-2-5, sending the Crimson to the petit final where it won a best-of-three series with the Eagles (L, 2-3-6; W, 1-2-6; W, 1-2-5) to claim third place (12-4) in the 10-team field.

Excellent conditions were on hand as sailors competed on Sunday, with the breeze coming from the west-southwest between 6-14 knots. A round robin was contested and finished on Sunday once the temperature rose and the wind died down for safe sailing. After a second round, the scheduled knockout competition, however, was not held as time ran out on the weekend.
The Crimson opened with a victory over MIT, 1-2-5, but fell short against Brown, 3-5-6. Harvard answered, though, with decisions over Bowdoin (1-3-6), Roger Williams (1-3-6 DNS) and Tulane (1-2-4) to get to 4-1 on the day. The Crimson suffered back-to-back losses to Boston College (2-4-5) and Yale (2-5-6) before finishing the round with a 1-3-5 triumph over College of Charleston.
Much like Saturday, Harvard began Sunday with a 1-1 record, falling to MIT (3-4-6) before answering with a 1-3-5 win over Brown, which propelled it to a 1-2-5 victory over Bowdoin. The Crimson turned its two wins into three additional Ws as it defeated Roger Williams (1-2-4), Tulane (1-4-5) and Boston College (1-2-5). Harvard, however, finished the regatta with losses to Yale (2-5-6) and College of Charleston (1-4-6) to secure third place (10-6) in the nine-team field.
Cordelia Burn spent the weekend sailing with
Peyton Hadfield, while
Kate Danielson shared her boat with
