Sailing Notches Two Third-Place Finishes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing recorded two top-three performances this past weekend, with the top-ranked coed team competing at the Friis Trophy Team Race in New London, Connectiuct, and the No. 8 women's squad racing at the Duplin Trophy on the Charles River.

Friis Trophy Team Race | New London, Conn.

Perfect conditions were on hand for the 64th running of the Friis Trophy. Saturday brought winds from the southwest between 6-14 knots, with a round-robin contested between all 10 teams before a bottom-4 was sailed. Sunday, meanwhile, featured a top-8 knockout round, which was held to determine final placings.

The Crimson opened with five straight victories, taking down Roger Williams (1-2-6), College of Charleston (1-2-4), Brown (1-2-5), Rhode Island (1-3-4) and Stanford (1-2-3), before experiencing a hiccup with a 2-4-5 loss to Boston College. The snag was short-lived as Harvard got back on track with a defeat of U.S. Coast Guard Academy (2-3-4), Vermont (1-2-3) and Tufts (1-2-5) to close out the day with an 8-1 record.

When final-day action rolled around, Harvard, which was the second-seeded team in the field, delivered No. 7-seed Brown a 2-0 decision (1-2-3, 1-2-4), setting up a date with the Cardinal. Stanford eventually came out on top, 1-2-5, sending the Crimson to the petit final where it won a best-of-three series with the Eagles (L, 2-3-6; W, 1-2-6; W, 1-2-5) to claim third place (12-4) in the 10-team field.

Justin Callahan and Kennedy Leehealey sailed together for a majority of the weekend, with Aidan Pesce stepping in as crew for a few races during the first round. Mitchell Callahan and Rosella Irfan raced for eight races during the round robin, with Alexandra Dorofeev competing against Tufts and Vermont. Robby Meek and Christina Chen, meanwhile, were paired together with Leehealey joining Meek for the BC race. On Sunday, Harvard went with Justin Callahan-Kennedy Leehealey, Mitchell Callahan-Rosella Irfan, and Robby Meek-Christina Chen.

Duplin Trophy Women's Team Race | Cambridge, Mass.

Excellent conditions were on hand as sailors competed on Sunday, with the breeze coming from the west-southwest between 6-14 knots. A round robin was contested and finished on Sunday once the temperature rose and the wind died down for safe sailing. After a second round, the scheduled knockout competition, however, was not held as time ran out on the weekend.

The Crimson opened with a victory over MIT, 1-2-5, but fell short against Brown, 3-5-6. Harvard answered, though, with decisions over Bowdoin (1-3-6), Roger Williams (1-3-6 DNS) and Tulane (1-2-4) to get to 4-1 on the day. The Crimson suffered back-to-back losses to Boston College (2-4-5) and Yale (2-5-6) before finishing the round with a 1-3-5 triumph over College of Charleston.

Much like Saturday, Harvard began Sunday with a 1-1 record, falling to MIT (3-4-6) before answering with a 1-3-5 win over Brown, which propelled it to a 1-2-5 victory over Bowdoin. The Crimson turned its two wins into three additional Ws as it defeated Roger Williams (1-2-4), Tulane (1-4-5) and Boston College (1-2-5). Harvard, however, finished the regatta with losses to Yale (2-5-6) and College of Charleston (1-4-6) to secure third place (10-6) in the nine-team field.

Cordelia Burn spent the weekend sailing with Peyton Hadfield, while Kate Danielson shared her boat with Amelie Zucker. Harvard's third boat was directed by Zoey Ziskind, with Katherine Shin and Theresa Straw switching off as crew.

Harvard will have representation at three regattas this coming weekend, March 29-30. The Crimson is scheduled to appear at the Dellenbaugh Trophy Women's Team Race (Cranston, R.I.), Marchiando Trophy Team Race (Cambridge, Mass.) and BU Trophy Fleet Race (Boston, Mass.).
