Softball Heads Across Town for Match Up with Boston University

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard softball travels across the Charles River on Tuesday, Apr. 22 for its last nonconference contest of the 2025 regular season, as the Crimson will take on intrastate rival Boston University. First pitch at the BU Softball Field is slated 4 p.m. as all the action will air live on ESPN+.

CRIMSON UPDATES:
  • Harvard is 20-10 this season with a 9-6 record in conference play. With its win against Brown on Sunday, the Crimson secured its 18th straight 20-win season.
  • The Crimson hold a .667 winning percentage this season, tied with Brown for the highest in the Ancient Eight.
  • Over the weekend, Harvard hosted Brown for a three-game slate, as the Bears took the first two games in the series.
  • In Sunday's series finale, the Crimson bounced back, holding one of the Ivy League's best offenses scoreless in a 3-0 victory.
  • Junior pitcher Riley Flynn went the distance in the win, striking out two batters in her second complete game of the 2025 season. First-year catcher Quinn Salazar-Stewart and senior infielder Maya Douglas both drove in the game-winning runs in the second and third frames.
  • A spark plug for the Crimson at the plate, first-year utility Alexa Muller was key for the Harvard offense, posting a .444 batting average with a team-high four RBIs.
  • In the month of April, Muller is batting .375 with seven RBIs to go along with a 1.150 OPS.
  • As a team, the Crimson ranks third in batting average (.311) and second in earned run average (3.24) this year. Harvard is only of two teams in the Ancient Eight to bat above .300 and have a team ERA below 4.00. The Crimson also own +27 run differential.
  • Harvard is capitalizing on fast start this season, as the Crimson own a 16-3 record when it scores first in 2025.
  • The Crimson is led by second-year head coach Jenny Rohn. A former Harvard assistant coach, Rohn is 47-27 in her Harvard tenure and 65-56 in her three-year head coaching career.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS:
  • The three-time defending Patriot League regular season champions, Boston University is 29-15 this season with a 10-2 record in conference play.
  • The Terriers welcomed Army to Boston last weekend. After winning the series opener, 4-1, Boston University dropped the last two games against the Black Knights.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Tuesday's showdown between Harvard and Boston University represents the 52nd meeting in series history. The Terriers lead the all-time series, 21-30, winning the last five contests.
  • Last season saw the Crimson welcome Boston University to Soldiers Field, as the visitors took the win, 9-5. Four different Crimson drove in runs in the contest, as senior infielder Maya Douglas and sophomore infielder Sophie Sun both tallied two hits.
HERE COMES THE SUN:
  • The only student-athlete in conference history to win Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Year in the same season, Sun is producing a stellar encore season.
  • One of 10 semifinalists for the NFCA/Tucci Freshman of the Year award last year, Sun ranks in the top-five in the Ivy League in batting average (.402), slugging percentage (.667), runs scored (27), hits (41), home runs (7) and total bases (68).
  • Across 235 career plate appearances, Sun has a .413 batting average, making her the program leader in career batting average. A native of Austin, Texas, Sun has 97 career hits.
BRINGING THE PAYNE:
  • A native of Liberty Township, Ohio, junior infielder Finley Payne is enjoying the best season of her collegiate career.
  • Payne ranks second on the team in both OPS (1.076), RBIs (21) and batting average (.384), all career-highs.
  • Against Ivy League opposition, Payne is batting a team-high .423, adding a team-best 16 RBIs in conference play as well.
  • Her four hits against Columbia earlier this season are the most for a Crimson in a single-game in 2025.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS:
  • The Crimson pitching staff is filled with talent this campaign, boasting a steady rotation of strong arms.
  • A pair of Harvard student-athletes rank in the top-five in ERA in the Ivy League. Flynn is second (2.40), while sophomore Nicolette Hunter is fourth (2.59). Harvard is the only school in the Ivy League to have multiple student-athletes rank in the top-five in ERA in the conference.

WE BRING THE BOOM:
  • The long ball has been a staple for the Crimson in recent contests.
  • From Mar. 29 to Apr. 15, Harvard hit at lease one home run in six straight games, its longest streak since 2011, when it hit a home run in seven straight games.
IVY EXCELLENCE:
  • Over the last five full seasons, Harvard is one of the top softball programs in the Ivy League, owning a league-best 75-30 record in conference play from 2018 to 2024.
  • In that time span, the Crimson is the only team in the Ivy League to not drop double-digit conference games in a single-season.
  • Harvard has won back-to-back Ivy League regular season titles, as it won the inaugural Ivy League Tournament in Princeton in 2023.
