Ali Farag ’14 Announces Retirement from Professional Squash

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – One of the best to ever play the game, Harvard men's squash alum, Ali Farag '14, announced his retirement from professional squash today. Farag enjoyed success at every stage of his career on his way to becoming the world's No. 1 player, a title he held for an astounding 238 weeks during his 11-year career. His career started at the Murr Center with the Harvard Crimson men's squash team, where he captured two CSA Individual National Championships and posted an individual record of 52-2 across four seasons.

Farag, a global icon and one of the most influential players in the game, took to social media to announce his retirement this morning.

"I always knew this day would come and I knew it would be very emotional. And it is, but in a good way. Squash been my passion, my identity and my purpose for as long as I can remember, but there was always another part of me, a family man. Now, I'm a husband and a father to two beautiful young girls... I've always believed in balance, and I feel like the balance has shifted now. This is what I want the next chapter to be. I'm walking away at the perfect time," Farag said in a statement on Instagram. "Squash is in a place it has never been, and the level is higher than ever in the men's and women's game."

A 46-time winner on the PSA Squash Tour, Farag ranks sixth all-time in career victories. Four of those 46 titles were World Championships, which makes him one of just two Egyptian men to accomplish the feat in PSA history. He reached an incredible 81 PSA finals, winning 445 of his 553 matches on tour, and retired ranked World No.2, less than two weeks after competing in his fifth World Championship final.

His contributions to the sport were nothing short of inspirational and Farag will forever be remembered as one of the best to ever play the game.
