EUGENE, Ore. – Crimson history was made at Hayward Field on the third day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as sophomore
Ferenc Kovacs made a statement with a third place finish in the men's 1500m final, becoming the first All-America First Team selection in the event in school history.
Entering the NCAA Outdoor Championships ranked 73
rd in the nation with a season-best time of 3:40.08, Kovacs showed excellence and determination in the final. After posting a 46.22 over the first 300m of the race, Kovacs maintained his position over the next two laps, as he made his move in the last lap. With 200m to go, Kovacs went with the lead pack, crossing the finish line in 3:47.42 to take a spot on the podium in his first career NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance.
The men's high jump saw sophomore
Tito Alofe make his fourth NCAA Championships appearance in the event. The Ivy League champion in the event this year, Alofe finished in a tie for 20
th after clearing 2.10m (6'10.75").
Along with the two strong showing in the men's events, senior
Izzy Goudros started her time in the women's heptathlon at Hayward Field this afternoon as well. Making her sixth NCAA Championships appearance, Goudros started her journey fast, posting a time of 13.61 in the 100m hurdles, good for 1034 points. That time was also the fifth-fastest among the heptathlon field as well.
The high jump saw Goudros add to her points tally. A native of Toronto, Ontario, Goudros cleared the first two heights of 1.54m (5'.5") and 1.57m (5'1.75") on her first attempts. That momentum carried to 1.60m (5'3"), as Goudros cleared that height on her first try for an additional 736 points.
With a throw of 11.33m (37'2.25") in the shot put, Goudros moved her point tally up to 2387 points heading into the 200m, the final event of the day. Goudros ended the day on a high note in the 200m, posting a time of 23.61, the fastest mark in the field.
The Ivy League record holder in the heptathlon, Goudros ends the first day of action in the heptathlon in 14
th place with 3405 points.
