Men’s Heavyweight Rowing Wins 158th Harvard-Yale Regatta

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Harvard men's heavyweight rowing captured the 158th Harvard-Yale Regatta winning all four races on the weekend, capping its 2024-25 season on Saturday night on the Thames River.

Competing in America's oldest collegiate athletic competition in an event that began in 1852, Harvard took "The Race" for the second straight season and improved to 97-60 in the all-time series against the Bulldogs.

Closing the night with the first varsity eight race, Harvard (21:23.5) claimed an open-water win over Yale (21:37.7) behind an approximately 14-second margin to bring home the Sexton Cup. The two crews rowed through the four-mile course that featured a moderate headwind and choppy water. Harvard built off its gold medal at the Eastern Sprints and silver medal at the IRA National Championships from earlier this season.

In the second varsity eight race, the Crimson (15:03.5) defeated Yale (15:23.4) by over 19 seconds in an open-water victory to garner the F. Valentine Chappell Trophy. The two crews raced through a slight headwind and intermittent rain over the three-mile course. Harvard built off its gold medal in the second varsity eight at this spring's Eastern Sprints and silver medal at the IRA National Championships.

Opening competition on Saturday, the Crimson captured the two-mile third varsity eight race as Harvard (9:17.9) bested Yale (9:25.0) to capture the New London Cup with an open-water margin. Both crews rowed through rain during the race. The Crimson followed up on its gold medals in the third varsity eight at the Eastern Sprints and IRA National Championships from earlier this spring.

Behind its wins in Saturday's three races, the Crimson captured the Hoyt C. Pease and Robert Chappell Jr. Trophy for winning the majority of the first varsity, second varsity, and third varsity eight races.

In Friday's two-mile combination race featuring the fourth varsity eight, Harvard (9:16.5) topped Yale (9:21.5) by five seconds to take the James Snider Cup in a race that featured a following tailwind with improving water flattening over the racecourse.
