JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Harvard Men's Basketball rising sophomore guard
Robert Hinton's run with Chinese Taipei at the FIBA Asia Cup – the continental basketball championship of Asia and Oceania – has come to an end in the quarterfinals following a 78-75 setback to Iran at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Making his debut in a FIBA event, Hinton played in all five games for Chinese Taipei, posting 11.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.3 percent from the field, 54.6 percent from 3-point distance, and 80.0 percent from the free throw line.
During the group stage Hinton helped Chinese Taipei place second in Group D with wins over the Philippines, 95-87, on Aug. 5 and Iraq, 87-60, on Aug. 7 before falling against New Zealand, 118-78, on Aug. 9. Moving to the knockout stage, the team topped Jordan, 78-64, in the play-in round before falling to Iran in the quarterfinals. The FIBA Asia Cup stands as the highest level of competition for national teams from Asia and Oceania outside the Olympics and World Cup.
Hinton opened Asia Cup with 14 points and four rebounds, while hitting 5-of-10 field goals and 3-of-4 free throws, in the win over the Philippines before adding five points and three boards in the victory over Iraq. He scored a team-high 24 points on 7-of-13 field goals, 4-of-5 treys, and 6-of-7 free throws against New Zealand. In the knockout rounds, he added four points and two boards vs. Jordan along with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting with four rebounds vs. Iran.
Across 13 games played for Chinese Taipei in the summer of 2025 over the Jones Cup and Asia Cup, Hinton helped the team tally a 10-3 record, while registering 12.5 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game, a 46.1 field goal percentage, 38.7 3-point percentage, and 84.2 free throw percentage.
Hinton has now appeared in 21 career games for the Chinese Taipei senior men's national team, helping the program post a 17-4 record in those contests with 12.8 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, a 47.6 field goal percentage, 40.0 3-point percentage, and 82.8 free throw percentage. Across 29 career games for the Chinese Taipei senior and developmental teams, he has recorded 13.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field, 39.6 percent from 3-point distance, and 82.3 percent on free throws.
Earlier this summer, Hinton helped Team Taiwan earn a silver medal at the 44
th William Jones Cup in New Taipei City, Taiwan. Hinton earned First Team All-Jones Cup and helped the team post a 7-1 record over eight games in nine days from July 12-20. Hinton averaged 13.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 87.0 percent from the free throw line.
During his first season at Harvard in 2024-25, Hinton earned Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors unanimously, captured Ivy League Rookie of the Week eight times, and won the team's Raymond P. Lavietes Most Valuable Player Award. Hinton averaged 14.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.3 steals, and 30.0 minutes per game, while scoring in double figures 19 times in 27 games. He shot 47.7 percent from the field, 35.6 percent from 3-point distance, and 76.3 percent from the free throw line.
Harvard is set to open its 2025-26 season against MIT on Friday, Nov. 7 at 5:00 p.m. (ESPN+) following exhibition contests at Providence College (Oct. 25) and at home vs. UMass Boston on Oct. 30 at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
