Sailing Ready for Another Busy Weekend on Water

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing is set for another busy weekend on the water, with the NEISA Match Racing Championships, Hoyt Trophy, Mrs. Hurst Bowl and Hood Trophy all on the docket. The regattas are slated for Saturday, Sept. 20-Sunday, Sept. 21.

Forecast

NEISA Match Racing Championships | New London, Conn.

Saturday will be sunny and in the upper-60s, with winds blowing between 5-8 knots (NE, ENE, E, ESE, SE). Sunday will be more of the same – upper-60s, sunny skies – but the wind will pick up slightly (9-10 knots) and come out of the east-southeast before shifting to the southeast.

Hoyt Trophy | Cranston, R.I.

First-day action will come under mostly sunny skies with the temperature rising to 68 by early afternoon. The wind is expected out of the northeast for most of the day before shifting to the east at 5-7 knots. Sunday will have similar conditions, with winds ranging between 4-8 knots (E, ESE, SE).

Mrs. Hurst Bowl | Hanover, N.H.

Saturday will be pleasant with plenty of sun in the sky and temps in the mid-to-upper-60s. The wind will mostly be out of the north-northwest at just 3-4 knots. The final day will be warmer, reaching 72 degrees by early afternoon, and winds will be better as the day gets old and come from the south (2-6 knots).

Hood Trophy | Medford, Mass.

A great Saturday will be in store for sailors with sunny skies and low-to-mid-60s temps. The wind will hold steady at 6 knots and be out of the north-northeast in the morning before shifting to the east by early afternoon. Sunday will be a tad warmer (high of 67) with puffs of wind ranging between 5-9 knots (ESE).

What to Know

  • A week after winning the Harman Cup, finishing second at the Charles Invitational and Harry Anderson Trophy, and third at the Toni Deutsch Trophy, Harvard returned to the water to win the Hatch Brown Trophy and saw Robby Meek capture the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship, while Sophia Montgomery and Kate Danielson came in second and fifth, respectively, at the NEISA Women's Singlehanded Championship.
  • Through two weekends, the Crimson has finished in the upper half of the team standings at all seven regattas. Including the final placement at the events listed in the note above, Harvard also came in seventh at the 18-team Regis Trophy last week and had three entries at the Harvard Invitational, with the top squad finishing ninth of 18.
  • Meek's win at the NEISA Open Singlehanded Championship earned himself the conference's automatic bid to the ICSA Open Singlehanded Championship in November. The junior's victory marked the seventh in program history and he became the Crimson's first back-to-back winner since Clay Johnson won in 2006 and 2007.
  • Harvard enters the NEISA Match Racing Championship as the defending champions, following last season's impressive performance. Justin Callahan skippered the Crimson boat, with Mitchell Callahan, Xavier Ayala-Vermont and Kate Danielson serving as crew. Harvard finished with a 7-1 record before dismissing Tufts in the quarterfinals (2-0), U.S. Coast Guard in the semis (2-1) and Yale in the final (2-0). The Crimson posted a score of 3, with Yale (6) and Boston College (9) rounding out the top three.
  • The Crimson also enters the Hood Trophy as the defending champs. Harvard finished first of 20 teams, with Harrison Strom, William Bourell and Ayala-Vermont all back this season from that trophy-winning squad.
  • Harvard will compete at the Hoyt Trophy in Cranston this weekend and will look to improve upon its sixth-place showing (of 18) from last year. Those who were on hand in 2024 and back in 2025 are Mitchell Callahan (A-division skipper), Meek (B-division skipper), Amelie Zucker (B-division crew) and JJ Drummond (B-division crew).
  • The Crimson is set to appear at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl for the first time since 2023, when it came in seventh place at the 18-team regatta. That season, Bowdoin played host in Brunswick, Maine.

Up Next

Harvard will sail at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship – Round 1 (Annapolis, Md.) and the Danmark Trophy (New London, Conn.), Sept. 27-28. The Crimson will also compete at the one-day (Sept. 27) Smith Trophy and BU Invitational on the Charles River.
