Sailing Wins NEISA Match Race Championship, Posts Three Top-5 Finishes

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Sailing continued its run of impressive results, making it three straight weeks of at least one victory. The third week of the fall campaign saw the Crimson capture its second straight NEISA Match Race Championship, while turning in top-5 performances at the Mrs. Hurst Bowl and Hoyt Trophy.

NEISA Match Race Championship | New London, Conn.

Harvard, which was skippered by Justin Callahan and supported by Kate Danielson, Harrison Strom and Mitchell Callahan, opened the two-day regatta with a perfect 7-0 record in round-robin action. The Crimson defeated the hosts, U.S. Coast Guard, Yale, Boston College, Vermont, Bowdoin, Brown and Roger Williams, to finish the day as the only undefeated team. Harvard went on to blank Vermont in the quarterfinals, 2-0, before choosing to face BC, which it also defeated, 2-0, in the semis, setting up a finals showdown with Brown. The Bears handed the Crimson a loss in Race 1 of a best-of-3 series, but Harvard answered resoundingly, sweeping the last two competitions to emerge with its second straight regatta title. The Crimson finished with a final score of 3, while the Bears ended with a 6.

Mrs. Hurst Bowl | Hanover, N.H.

Harvard tied MIT for the third-best score in the field (125), but landed in fourth place of 17 teams due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. Zoey Ziskind was joined by crew Christina Chen (1-4) and Peyton Hadfield (5-9) in the A-division and the boat posted single-digit finishes in six of nine races. Ziskind and Chen enjoyed the Crimson's top-2 efforts, coming in second place in Race 3, before winning Race 4. Montgomery and Shin, meanwhile, were impressive as well, finishing in ninth or better in eight of nine races and won Race 7. Ziskind, Chen and Hadfield posted a final score of 68, while Montgomery-Shin completed the two-day event with a 57.

Hoyt Trophy | Cranston, R.I.

The Crimson matched Connecticut College for the fourth-best score (98) in the 18-team field, but took fifth place due to the number of high-place finishes (2). Robby Meek and Rosella Irfan competed in the A-division, while Jacob Posner and Amelie Zucker took on the regatta's B-division. The quartet was supported by reserves Xavier Ayala-Vermont, Michelle Chung and Aidan Pesce. Meek-Irfan was solid the entire weekend, coming in eighth place or better in all but one race. The duo nearly won Race 2, finishing in second and broke through in Race 5 with a victorious performance. Its final score of 40 was second best in the division. Over in the B-division, Posner-Zucker posted four single-digit finishes, including two fourth-place showings (Race 1, 4). They ended with a 58.
