CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard opened the weekend at the Harvard Invitational and the John Thomas Terrier Classic with a historic showing in the women's 1000m at the BU Track & Tennis Center, as junior
Sophia Gorriaran set a new Ivy League record with a time of 2:38.75.
A native of Providence, Rhode Island and a four-time All-American in the women's 800m across indoor and outdoor competition, Gorriaran surpasses the former record of 2:39.13 set by Princeton's Hannah Riggins during the 2025 Ivy League Heptagonal Indoor Championships. Gorriaran's mark also ranks third all-time in NCAA history.
HARVARD INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:
- First-year Yannick Kraus made his first appearance in the men's heptathlon during his Crimson tenure at the Harvard Invitational.
- After starting the day with a time of 7.24 in the men's 60m, a jump of 6.37m (20'10.75") in the long jump put Kraus in third place with 1467 points after the first two events of the day.
- Kraus grew his point tally to 2061 points with a throw of 11.79m (38'8.25") in the shot put, as Kraus ended the day in second place with 2828 points after clearing 1.96m (6'5") in the high jump. Kraus will complete the heptathlon tomorrow with the 60 hurdles, pole vault and 1000m.
- First-year Daniel Ye continues to show consistent improvement in the men's weight throw, as the Chappaqua, New York native took third place with a collegiate-career best throw of 18.39m (60'4").
- Two Crimson featured in the open flight of the men's high jump, as junior Chris Ruano finished in seventh after clearing 1.90m (6'2.75"). First-year Demetris Tzoannos cleared 1.85m (6'.75") to finish in ninth.
- A pair of Harvard first-years made their indoor track debuts in the men's 3000m. First-year Ansh More led the way, finishing in seventh place after posting a 8:39.36, as first-year Eamon Gordon took 17th with a time of 9:01.05.
- In his fourth appearance of the season, junior Isaac Delaney finished in third place in the men's shot put with a throw of 16.53m (54'2.75").
- First-year Preston Ellis orchestrated a strong showing in the men's 500m, ending the race in second with a time of 1:05.79.
- In the men's 60m, junior Amari Turner finished in 12th place with a time of 6.91, as sophomore Camren Ware ran a 6.94 to take 20th.
- The 2024 and 2025 Ivy League champion in the outdoor men's high jump, Tito Alofe started his junior campaign with a win in the men's high jump invite section at the Harvard Invitational, as the Peachtree City, Georgia native cleared 2.21m (7'3") to sit atop the podium. Alofe is now tied for fourth on the national leaderboard with his performance at the Harvard Invitational.
JOHN THOMAS TERRIER CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS:
- Across town at the BU Track & Tennis Center, several members of the Crimson's women's team took part in the opening day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic.
- Harvard's time at the meet started with the women's 400m invite, as sophomore Kaelin Creagh finished in 13th place with a collegiate career-best time of 56.06.
- The open section of the women's 400m saw senior and team captain Jacklynn Okereke finish in fourth place after running a 56.16 in the ninth heat of the event.
- A trio of student-athletes represented Harvard in the invite section of women's 200m. Sophomore Ella Cooper continued her impressive form in the event with a third place finish, as her time of 24.03 is a new personal-best in indoor competition and is tied for fourth all-time in school history.
- Along with Cooper, junior Mickaila Haisley also finished in the top 10 of the women's 200m invite, taking 10th place after clocking a 24.66 in her first indoor 200m of her collegiate career. One of the Crimson's team captains this season, senior Mfoniso Andrew placed 14th after running a 24.76.
- Sophomore Abigail Dennis picked up the first win of her Crimson career in the women's 200m open, as her time of 24.64 is a new collegiate career best.
- History arrived for the Crimson in the women's 1000m, as Gorriaran set a new Ivy League record with a time of 2:38.75, winning the event in the process.
- A native of Providence, Rhode Island and a four-time All-American in the women's 800m across indoor and outdoor competition, Gorriaran's time ranks third all-time in NCAA history.
- Two more Crimson captured spots in the top 10 of the women's 1000m as well. Sophomore Abigail Sadler finished in seventh place with a time of 2:47.43, a mark that ranks eighth all-time in school history, while first-year Dylan McElhinney took ninth after crossing the finish line in 2:50.35.
- Harvard's time at the opening day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic ended with the women's 4x400m relay, as Creagh, junior Marta Amani, Cooper and Andrew combined for a time of 3:39.29 to finish in second place, as that time also ranks ninth all-time in school history.
