Gorriaran Sets New NCAA Record in Women’s 1000m at Saucony Battle for Boston

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard track & field closed out the 2025-26 indoor regular season with a historic and groundbreaking run at the Saucony Battle for Boston, as junior Sophia Gorriaran set a new NCAA record in the women's 1000m with a time of 2:37.72.

With that mark, Gorriaran surpasses Penn State's Haley Kitching's mark of 2:38.45 from the Nittany Lion Challenge earlier this season. A native of Providence, Rhode Island, Gorriaran is the first student-athlete in NCAA history to run a sub-2:38.00 time in the women's 1000m. Earlier this season, Gorriaran set a new Ivy League record in the women's 1000m at the John Thomas Terrier Classic, as her time of 2:38.75 ranked No. 3 in national history at that moment.

A four-time All-American in the 800m across indoor and outdoor competition, Gorriaran is now responsible for two separate active NCAA records, becoming the first student-athlete in program history to accomplish this feat. During the 2024 outdoor season, Gorriaran joined Victoria Bossong '25, Chloe Fair '25 and Maia Ramsden '24 in setting an NCAA record that still stands in the women's outdoor distance medley relay at the 2024 Penn Relays. The Crimson quartet combined for a time of 10:37.55, a time that is almost two seconds faster than the No. 2 mark.

Heading into the postseason, Gorriaran ranks inside the top 25 nationally in two separate events. In the 800m, Gorriaran ranks ninth with a time of 2:01.30 at the Dr. Sander Scorcher, as the Providence, Rhode Island ran a 4:29.53 at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational to hold the No. 20 spot nationally.

Along with Gorriaran's legendary and groundbreaking 1000m, two more Crimson impressed at the Saucony Battle for Boston. First-year Dylan McElhinney took second place with a time of 2:48.72 in the women's 1000m. Over in the men's mile, first-year Grant Schroder finished in 30th place with a time of 4:05.95.
