BOSTON, Mass. – Harvard track & field wrapped up its time at the Riverhawk Invitational with a statement showing, as two school records fell at the TRACK at new balance.
In just his second collegiate race, first-year
Arpad Kovacs dominated the field in the first heat of the men's 400m invite, finishing in first place with a time of 46.56. With that mark, Kovacs surpasses the former school record of 46.98 ran by
Gregory Lapit '24 in 2022. Kovacs becomes the fourth student-athlete in the Ivy League this season to go sub-47 seconds in the men's indoor 400m, as his time is tied for second in the Ancient Eight.
Later in the day, junior
Amari Turner orchestrated a breakthrough moment in the men's 200m, setting the school record in the event with a staggering time of 20.77, breaking the former record of 21.07 set by
Lance Ward '24 in 2023. Turner is the first student-athlete in program history to go sub-21 seconds in the men's indoor 200m, as his time is tied for 12
th in the nation and is second in the Ivy League.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
- In the men's 60m hurdles, junior Simon Weiser finished in fourth place with a time of 8.14.
- Two Crimson featured in the men's 60m final. The Ivy League's defending champion in the men's 100m dash, junior Timi Esan finished in second after clocking a 6.80, while senior and team captain Jonas Clarke ran a 6.87 to finish in fourth place.
- A heptathlon standout for the Crimson, first-year Yannick Kraus won the men's pole vault with a height of 4.55m (14'11").
- First-year Joachim Johnson cleared 2.08m (6'9.75") to win the men's high jump, as fellow classmate Demetris Tzoannos took 17th place after clearing 1.85m (6'.75"). Senior Chris Ruano rounded out Harvard's representation in the men's high jump, finishing in 22nd place with a height of 1.80m (5'10.75").
- History arrived for the Crimson in the men's 400m invite, as Kovacs set a new program standard in the event with a time of 46.56. Kovacs is just the second student-athlete in program history to run a sub-47 in the men's indoor 400m.
- A trio of Crimson competed in the men's 500m, all three of them securing spots in the top 10. Senior Justin Levy led the way, taking third place with a time of 1:04.03. First-year Preston Ellis slotted into seventh place after recording a 1:04.73, as sophomore Brayden Chavez rounded it out in eighth place with a time of 1:04.73.
- Turner's record-breaking sprint highlighted Harvard's showing in the men's 200m, as the Sanford, Florida native took first place with a time of 20.77. Turner is the first student-athlete in school history to go sub-21 in the indoor men's 200m. Esan slotted into fifth place with a time of 21.54, as sophomore Hudson Allain utilized a 21.75 to finish in seventh place. After a top-10 finish in the men's 60m, Clarke took 18th in the men's 200m with a time of 22.04.

Three meets await the Crimson next weekend, as Harvard hosts the Crimson Open and select student-athletes will hit the road for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational and the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14.
