Baseball Beats Yale in Game One, 5-3, Splits Saturday Doubleheader

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Harvard University baseball opened its twin bill with Yale University with a 5-3 victory in game one before dropping a 9-6 decision in game two in an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at George H.W. Bush Field.
 
In a matchup featuring two of the top four teams in the Ivy League standings, the Crimson (6-18, 5-5 Ivy) remained in fourth place in the conference standings while the Bulldogs (18-10, 8-3 Ivy) held onto their top spot in the league rankings.
 
In game one, senior right-hander Gio Colasante threw 6.0 innings in the start and win, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts while junior right-hander Ryan McHugh tossed 3.0 innings and permitted no runs on three hits and no walks in his second save of the season. At the plate, juniors Tyler Shulman and Jack Rickheim each provided RBI singles while seniors Max Lane and Jordan Kang each added an RBI.
 
In game two, Rickheim went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, a home run, and a double, hitting his fifth homer of the season, while first-year Aidan Colasante finished 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, and a double as one of five Crimson to post multiple hits in the game. Gio Colasante (two hits, RBI), sophomore catcher Liam Wilson (two hits, RBI, triple, double), and senior center fielder Max Lane (two hits) all added multi-hit games. Harvard posted a season-high five doubles in the day's second contest. 

Game 1: Harvard 5, Yale 3 

Senior right-hander Gio Colasante allowed two earned runs over 6.0 innings in the win, junior right-hander Ryan McHugh threw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief in the save, and Harvard topped Yale, 5-3, in game one of the series.
 
In the series opener, the Crimson rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and maintaining the lead the rest of the way on its way to the victory over the Bulldogs.
 
Colasante threw 6.0 innings in the start and win, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits and one walk with three strikeouts while McHugh tossed 3.0 innings and permitted no runs on three hits and no walks in his second save of the season. At the plate, juniors Tyler Shulman and Jack Rickheim each provided RBI singles while seniors Max Lane and Jordan Kang each added an RBI.

How It Happened

  • Yale opened the game's scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Crimson answered with four runs in the top of the fifth to move ahead 4-2. Rickheim and Shulman each hit RBI singles to start the rally and knot the score at 2-2. With the bases loaded, Lane then absorbed a hit by pitch and Kang walked to plate two more runs.
  • The Bulldogs pulled within 4-3 in the last of the sixth on an RBI double.
  • Colasante brought in the game's final run with a ground ball in the top of the ninth before McHugh closed the contest in the bottom half of the frame. 

Game 2: Yale 9, Harvard 6 

Junior shortstop Jack Rickheim went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a home run, and a double, and the Crimson tallied a season-high five doubles, but Harvard fell to Yale in game two, 9-6, on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Crimson pulled within 5-2 in the top of the sixth and within 9-6 in the top of the eighth before the Bulldogs held on for the decision to split the twin bill.
 
Rickheim went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs, a home run, and a double, hitting his fifth homer of the season, while first-year Aidan Colasante finished 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI, and a double as one of five Crimson to post multiple hits in the game.   • Sophomore catcher Liam Wilson registered two hits, an RBI, a triple, a double, and a run.
  • Senior first baseman Gio Colasante finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a double.
  • Senior center fielder Max Lane contributed two hits.
  • Senior third baseman Jordan Kang notched a double and a run.
  • Senior right-hander Jack Smith threw 1.2 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk with one strikeout.
  • As a team, the Crimson posted 13 hits – including a season-high five doubles – marking its fifth game this season with double-figure hits.
  • Five members of the Crimson posted multiple hits in the game. 

How It Happened

  • Yale plated two runs in the bottom of the first and three runs in the last of the third to stake itself to a 5-0 lead.
  • The Crimson responded in the top of the sixth as Rickheim launched a two-run home run out to left field to bring the Crimson within 5-2.
  • The Bulldogs scored three runs in the last of the sixth to move ahead 8-2.
  • Harvard answered with two runs in the top of the seventh behind an RBI double from Rickheim and an RBI single from Gio Colasante, trimming the margin to 8-4.
  • The hosts notched one run in the bottom of the seventh to make the difference 9-4.
  • The Crimson plated the game's final runs in the top of the eighth with an RBI single from Aidan Colasante and an RBI triple from Wilson.
