CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Gerry Byrne announced today that assistant coach
Andy Meyers has been promoted to defensive coordinator. Meyers, who joined the Crimson staff prior to the 2026 season as an assistant coach, will assume expanded leadership of Harvard's defensive unit, overseeing game planning, player development and day-to-day preparation for the Crimson defense.
"Andy has made an immediate and meaningful impact on our program," Byrne said. "His defensive knowledge, teaching ability and relentless investment in our student-athletes have been evident from the moment he arrived in Cambridge. He brings tremendous energy, clarity and care to everything he does, and this promotion reflects the trust we have in him to continue elevating our defensive identity."
With help from Meyers, Harvard's defense was a driving force behind the team's success in 2026. The Crimson allowed 11.4 goals per game – the lowest total since the 2017 season – and finished as the top man-down unit in the nation with a 72.7-percent success rate. A defense that was consistent in limiting opportunities, opponents were only shooting at a 27.5-percent clip in 2026, the lowest of the Byrne era. With Meyers on staff, Harvard made history in 2026, flying to an 8-0 start – the best since the 1961 season – while collecting the program's first ever win over a team ranked No. 1 in the National Polls when the Crimson dropped No. 1 Syracuse, 13-12, in February.
Several Crimson defenders enjoyed career seasons under Meyers including LSM
Sean Jordan, who posted a career-best 27 ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers during his First Team All-Ivy League caliber season. Meyers also helped develop first-year close defender,
Quinn Kelly, who earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy League honors in his rookie season. Seniors
Owen Guest and
Charlie Muller took spots on NEILA All-New England teams under Meyers guidance. Other key players also continued their development under Meyers including sophomore close defender
Michael Savadove, who posted a career best 11 caused turnovers, and first-year SSDM
Callan McLaughlin who became a key piece in the Crimson's defensive scheme in his first season.
Meyers came to Harvard after a successful stint at Penn State, where he helped guide the Nittany Lions to Championship Weekend in 2025. Prior to his time in Happy Valley, Meyers spent two seasons at Christopher Newport, where he helped the Captains post a 37-5 record, reach the NCAA Elite Eight in 2022 and advance to the Final Four in 2023. During his tenure, Christopher Newport featured one of the nation's top defensive units, with CNU leading the country in adjusted defensive efficiency and caused turnovers per game in 2022.
Meyers also brings defensive coordinator experience from Otterbein University, where he worked with the Cardinals for two seasons while assisting in all areas of the program. A former standout at Carthage College, Meyers was a two-time All-CCIW selection and the conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
Under Byrne, Harvard has continued to establish itself among the nation's top programs. The Crimson reached the NCAA Tournament in 2022 and returned in 2025 after posting 10 wins, earning an Ivy League Tournament berth, and climbing as high as No. 9 in the national polls. In 2026, Harvard continued its rise with an 8-0 start highlighted by a win over No. 1 Syracuse, the program's first victory over a top-ranked opponent. Following the historic start, the Crimson tied the highest ranking in program history, rising to No. 3 and receiving first-place votes for the first time in its history. Under Byrne, the Crimson defense has turned into a force, posting a program record 175 caused turnovers in 2025 while also ranking among the top riding and clearing teams in the nation since his arrival in 2019. Harvard returns a talented and veteran core of players to the defensive unit in 2027 where it will look to continue trending in the right direction under Meyers.
