Day 7 - August 26: Farewell Canada

On Saturday, the Crimson said farewell to Canada, flying back to Boston from Toronto.

Harvard men’s basketball took part in a comprehensive experience during its time in Canada, including several cultural and sightseeing stops across the three cities in which it visited – Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. In Montreal, the Crimson visited St. Joseph’s Oratory and Mount Royal before taking a jet boat tour of the St. Lawrence River. In Ottawa, Harvard toured Parliament before a luncheon at the residence of the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, David Cohen. In Toronto, the Crimson visited CN Tower – the tallest free-standing structure on land in the Western Hemisphere.

On the court, sophomore forward Chisom Okpara led the Crimson with 15.0 points per game alongside 6.5 rebounds per game while junior guard Evan Nelson tallied 12.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and a team-high 3.8 assists per game. Junior guard Tyler Simon posted 11.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, and a team-best 3.5 steals per game, senior forward Justice Ajogbor averaged 8.3 points and team highs in rebounds (7.5) and blocks (2.5) per game, and sophomore guard Chandler Piggé added 9.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.


Day 6 - August 25: CN Tower Visit and Foreign Tour Finale

Sophomore forward Chisom Okpara scored 19 points, and junior guard Tyler Simon netted 16 points, but Harvard University men’s basketball dropped a 68-65 decision to the University of Toronto on Friday night at the Kimel Family Field House at the Goldring Centre.

Okpara scored hit 7-of-14 field goals as part of his 19-point effort, leading the Crimson with 15.0 points per game over the four-game foreign tour. Simon made 5-of-8 field goals and 4-of-7 3-pointers as part of his 16 points, adding eight rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

In the morning on Friday, the Crimson visited CN Tower – the tallest free-standing structure on land in the Western Hemisphere – to begin its final full day in Canada.

Day 5 - August 24: Travel from Ottawa to Toronto

On Thursday – the fifth day of Harvard’s 2023 foreign tour – the Crimson made the approximately 400-kilometer (250-mile) bus ride from Ottawa to Toronto in preparation for the final game of its trip against the University of Toronto on Friday.

After arriving in Toronto, Harvard took advantage of its off night during its tour of Canada with a team dinner at Hy’s Steakhouse.

Day 4 - August 23: Exploring Ottawa and Game No. 3

Junior forward Justice Ajogbor led four Crimson in double figures with a game-high 17 points as Harvard University men’s basketball beat Carleton University, 75-72, on Wednesday night at the Ravens’ Nest, picking up its second win during its 2023 Canada Foreign Tour.

Ajogbor netted his 17 points on 5-of-7 field goals and 7-of-10 free throws alongside nine rebounds. Junior guard Tyler Simon (14 points), sophomore forward Chisom Okpara (13 points, nine rebounds), and junior guard Evan Nelson (13 points, seven boards) joined him in double figures.

In the morning on Wednesday, the Crimson made the short walk from its hotel to visit Parliament in downtown Ottawa, taking a guided tour of the House of Commons at West Block in one of Parliament Hill’s historic buildings.

From there, Harvard traveled to the residence of the U.S. Ambassador, meeting and having lunch with David Cohen, the U.S. Ambassador to Canada while also connecting with several other U.S. Embassy staff members.

Day 3 - August 22: Travel to Ottawa and Game No. 2

In the morning, the Crimson made the approximately 200-kilometer (125-mile) bus ride from Montreal to Ottawa to reach the second city on the team’s itinerary during its time in Canada.

In the second game of its Canada Foreign Tour, sophomore guard Chandler Piggé posted a double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds, but Harvard fell to the University of Ottawa, 65-52, on Tuesday night at Montpetit Hall.

Day 2 - August 21: Exploring Montreal and Game No. 1

Sophomore forward Chisom Okpara led four Crimson in double figures with a game-high 19 points as Harvard University men’s basketball defeated McGill University, 75-47, on Monday night at Love Competition Hall in the first game of its 2023 Canada Foreign Tour.

Okpara scored his 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting with six rebounds while junior guard Evan Nelson (17 points), sophomore guard Chandler Piggé (12 points), and sophomore center Matt Filipowski (12 points) joined him in double figures.

In the morning, the Crimson took a jet boat tour of the Saint Lawrence River, sailing out of the Old Port of Montreal. The tour took the team through the Lachine Rapids, a series of rapids between the Island of Montreal and the South Shore.

Day 1 - August 20: Arrival in Canada

The Crimson competed in a modified scrimmage with McGill on Sunday night at Love Competition Hall in preparation for its four-game exhibition schedule in Canada.

Junior guard Tyler Simon led the Crimson with 23 points, making eight field goals, including three 3-pointers, while connecting on 4-of-4 free throws. Junior guard Evan Nelson scored 16 points, sinking four 3-pointers, sophomore forward Chisom Okpara netted 14 points, and senior forward Justice Ajogbor added 10 points.

Harvard opens its exhibition slate with a matchup against McGill tomorrow – Monday, Aug. 21 – at 7:00 p.m.

Harvard men’s basketball began its 2023 Canada Foreign Tour on Sunday, landing in Montreal in the morning and opening its trip with sightseeing stops at Saint Joseph’s Oratory and Mount Royal.

On the first day of its foreign tour, the Crimson made its first stop of the trip at Saint Joseph’s Oratory following breakfast. The Oratory – a Roman Catholic basilica and Canada’s largest church – stands as the highest building in Montreal and was founded in 1904. Harvard then made its way over to the top of Mount Royal and an overlook downtown Montreal.

Pre-Canada Training Camp: August 14-19

I think from a chemistry standpoint it'll help us out a lot. We're already on campus for about two weeks earlier, so I think it'll present a good opportunity for us to bond and mesh.

2023 Canada Foreign Tour: Trip Preview

 

Harvard  men’s basketball will embark on a foreign tour to Canada from August 20-26 with stops in Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto as part of a seven-day, four-game, three-city international experience.

The Crimson is set to play four games during its time in Canada alongside cultural experiences that include visits to Mount Royal, Old Montreal, the St. Lawrence River, a duck boat tour of Ottawa, the CN Tower, and Niagara Falls.

August 20-22: Montreal

Harvard will begin its foreign tour in Montreal – the second-most populous city in Canada and most populous city in the providence of Quebec with a population of just under 1.8 million people. The Crimson will face McGill University (August 21) in its first game of the trip during its time in the city. Cultural stops for the team in Montreal include a visit to Mount Royal – a mountain immediately adjacent to downtown Montreal – a tour of Old Montreal – one of Canada’s most historic neighborhoods – and a jet boat tour of the St. Lawrence River, which runs alongside the island of Montreal.

August 22-24: Ottawa

The Crimson’s trip will continue in the city of Ottawa, Ontario – the capital city of Canada with a population of just over one million people. The Crimson will compete in a pair of contests while in Ottawa, facing off with the University of Ottawa (August 22) and Carleton University (August 23). Harvard will also take an amphibious duck boat tour of Ottawa – a metropolis that sits at the confluence of the Ottawa River and Rideau River.

August 24-26: Toronto

Harvard will conclude its time in Canada in the city of Toronto – the capital of the province of Ontario, the most populous city in Canada, and fourth-most populous city in North America with a population of almost 2.8 million people. The Crimson’s final contest of the trip will come against the University of Toronto (August 25). While in Toronto, the program will visit CN Tower – the tallest frees-standing structure on land in the Western Hemisphere – and Niagara Falls – the famous waterfalls that straddle the border between the United States and Canada.

Canadian Connection

Since Tommy Amaker, The Thomas G. Stemberg '71 Family Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Basketball, took over the reins of the Crimson in 2007-08, Harvard has consistently recruited in Canada with one current student-athlete – Josh Hemmings ’24 – and eight alumni, including Danilo Djuricic ’21, Chris Egi ’18, Corey Johnson ’19, Noah Kirkwood ’22, Agunwa Okolie ’16, Laurent Rivard ’14, Luka Sakota ’23, and Patrick Steeves ’16, hailing from Canada.

Returning North of the Border

The Crimson returns to Canada for the first time since Harvard took on Buffalo in the James Naismith Classic in Toronto on November 16, 2019. The two teams played at Scotiabank Arena – the home of the NBA’s Toronto Raptors and NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs.
