Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week
Harvard Wins
13th Ivy League Title
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After winning the Ivy
League title and the conference's automatic bid, the Harvard
men's soccer team has earned the No. 10 seed in the 2009 NCAA
Division I men's soccer tournament. The Crimson, which has
reached the NCAA tournament four straight seasons, will play the
winner of Monmouth and Connecticut in a second-round contest Sunday
at Ohiri Field at 1 p.m.
Harvard finished the regular season with a 13-3-1 overall record,
including a 5-1-1 mark in the Ivy League. The Crimson enters the
NCAA tournament having won five of its last six games, including
three in a row. The team also boasted a 7-1 mark at home. Harvard
has qualified for the NCAA tournament 15 times in program history,
owning a 19-15 all-time record in the tournament.
Monmouth, which hosts UConn in an opening-round matchup Thursday
at noon, won the Northeast Conference tournament, earning a bid to
the NCAA tournament. The Hawks went 18-1-1 overall, defeating
Quinnipiac, 2-1, in the championship game of their conference
tournament. Monmouth, who has never played Harvard on the soccer
field, heads to the postseason riding a five-game win streak.
UConn earned an at-large bid out of the Big East Conference,
posting an 11-4-3 record during the regular season. The Huskies are
5-2-0 in their last seven games , losing twice in overtime.The
Huskies and Crimson have met 26 times, with UConn owning a 14-8-4
lead in the series. UConn downed Harvard, 4-0, earlier this season
in Storrs, Conn., on Oct. 14.
