Game On
The Harvard men's hockey team takes its first full weekend road
trip of the season, visiting Colgate Friday and No. 5 Cornell
Saturday. The Crimson and Raiders have tied their last two games in
Hamilton, N.Y., while Harvard has won five of its last six games
with the rival Big Red.
Follow From Home
Tom Brennan and Brendan Roche will have the call of the games on
WHRB-FM 95.3 and WHRB.org. Links to pay-per-day video broadcasts
and free live stats are available on GoCrimson.com.
Behind the Bench
Former Crimson captain, NCAA Frozen Four Most Outstanding Player
and 13-year National Hockey League veteran Ted Donato '91 is in his
sixth season as The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for Harvard Men's
Ice Hockey. He owns an 8368-17 record, three ECAC title-game
appearances and two NCAA tournament bids.
Last Time Out
Alex Killorn (Montreal, Que.) logged two goals and an assist to
help Harvard score five straight goals on the way to a 5-3 win at
Dartmouth in Friday's season opener. Kyle Richter (Calgary, Alta.)
made 41 saves to win in his first game since 2007-08. Five others
had multiple points: Marshall Everson (Edina, Minn.), Louis Leblanc
(Kirkland, Que.) and Daniel Moriarty (Bienfait, Sask.) with a goal
and an assist each and Michael Biega (Montreal, Que.) and Chris
Huxley (Weymouth, Mass.) with two helpers apiece.
Road Warriors
The first five games of Harvard's season will be played on the
road. It is the team's longest season-opening road stretch since
beginning 1958-59 with six straight on the road. The following six
games will then be at home, beginning with the Nov. 20 home opener
against St. Lawrence.
Road Show
The Crimson's win against Dartmouth was its first away from Bright
Hockey Center since defeating Cornell, 3-1, in the semifinal round
of the 2008 Bank of America ECAC Hockey Championship. Harvard's
last road win came by the same score in the 2008 regular-season
finale at Lynah Rink.
Special Forces
Harvard, which had ECAC Hockey's top power play in league games
last season started 2009-10 in similar fashion, scoring twice in
three man-advantage chances.
For Openers
With Friday's win, Harvard improved to 80-27-3 all-time in official
season openers. It is the second straight season that the Crimson
has opened with a win against the Big Green.
National Attention
After defeating Dartmouth in the season opener, the Crimson
received votes in this week's USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Division
I Men's Poll and has done so in each of the five polls this season.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate, already with seven games under its belt, has continued its
2008-09 trend of overtime games with three ties thus far. One of
those draws came against No. 15 Nebraska-Omaha. The Raiders ended a
three-game winless skid with a 4-2 win Saturday against Niagara
behind two goals and an assist from Austin Smith.
Brian Day and Smith share the team lead with four goals, while
Smith has added three assists for a team-high seven points. David
McIntyre, ECAC Hockey's top league goal-scorer last season, has six
points, all assists. Charles Long (.882 save percentage, 3.25
goals-against average) and Alex Evin (.896, 2.92) have split time
in net.
Harvard vs. Colgate in 2008-09
The Crimson and Raiders played to a 2-2 draw last November at Starr
Rink. Harvard rallied from a two-goal deficit on goals by Daniel
Moriarty in the second period and Alex Killorn in the third.
Michael Biega scored just 90 seconds into the game, and
Chris Huxley netted the third-period game-winner as Harvard
prevailed, 3-2, when the teams got together again in February.
Harvard vs. Colgate Series History
The Crimson owns a 44-18-6 series lead against the Raiders since
the first meeting Jan. 7, 1961, a 4-1 Harvard win. The Crimson has
gone 5-4-2 against Colgate under Ted Donato, with the most
memorable victory coming on a Kevin Du '07 double-overtime goal in
the 2005 ECAC semifinals.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell, like Harvard, has played just one game, a 3-2 overtime
victory Friday against Niagara. Joe Devin tallied the winning goal
in that game, while Colin Greening registered a goal and an assist.
Ben Scrivens made 28 saves in the Big Red's season-opening
win.
Harvard vs. Cornell in 2008-09
Michael Biega scored first, but the Big Red rallied on two goals by
Riley Nash to win last season's matchup in Ithaca, N.Y. At Bright
Hockey Center, a Valentine's Day crowd and national-television
audience on CBS College Sports saw the Crimson beat the Big Red,
4-2, behind 42 saves by Ryan Carroll (Hackensack, N.J.). Alex
Killorn, Matt McCollem (Westford, Mass.) and Daniel Moriarty were
among Harvard's scorers, while Colin Greening accounted for both
Cornell goals.
Harvard vs. Cornell Series History
Cornell holds a 65-58-7 series lead in one of college hockey's top
rivalries. The teams first met Jan. 8, 1910, a 5-0 Harvard win in
New York City. The games have been closer in recent years, with the
last 12 regular-season contests (and 15 of the last 16 overall
games) being decided by two goals or fewer. Harvard has won five of
its last six games against Cornell, limiting the Big Red to eight
total goals in that span. The Crimson has won seven of the teams'
last nine matchups. Harvard's 3-1 win in the 2008 ECAC Hockey
semifinals was the teams' sixth meeting in the eight years in the
league semifinals or final.
