CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Three freshmen scored
goals—with two registering the first points of their
careers—and junior Kyle Richter made 36 saves to help the
Harvard men's hockey team start the second semester with a
3-1 win against No. 8 Quinnipiac Tuesday night at Bright Hockey
Center.
Luke Greiner and David Valek had their first career tallies, while
Louis Leblanc netted his fourth goal to help Harvard (2-8-2, 2-5-2
ECAC Hockey) knock off the first-place Bobcats (13-4-1, 7-3-0) and
end a 10-game winless streak. Danny Biega recorded his first career
point with an assist to help the Crimson improve to 7-1 all-time at
home against the Bobcats. Chad Morin played in his 100th career
game.
Quinnipiac held a 37-23 shots advantage and got 20 saves from Dan
Clarke.
Greiner's first career goal was the only score of the opening
period and came at 9:54. After getting the puck in his own end from
Ryan Grimshaw, Colin Moore carried the puck over the offensive blue
line and ripped a slap shot wide left. The rebound came to Greiner
on the left wing, and his slapper got past a scrambling Clarke and
into the net. Harvard held an 8-5 edge in shots in the period.
The Bobcats outshot the Crimson, 15-8, in the second period, but
Harvard again had the period's only tally. Leblanc recorded
the power-play marker at 6:50. Classmate Alex Fallstrom started the
play by banking a pass back to Chris Huxley at the left point. The
defenseman then found Leblanc for a redirection below the left
circle.
Quinnipiac needed fewer than three minutes to halve the Harvard
lead in the third period. Yuri Bouharevich buried a rebound after
Richter stopped Greg Holt's point shot. Spencer Heichman then
nearly tied the game on a breakaway, but Richter made the save of
the game, one of his 16 in the period, to keep the Crimson on top.
Quinnipiac held a 17-7 advantage in third-period shots and pulled
Clarke for an extra skater but could not net an equalizer before
Valek sealed the win with 44 seconds remaining. Danny and Alex
Biega got the puck ahead to Valek, and he backhanded a shot into
the empty net from the neutral zone.
