New London, Conn. – For the sixth time in
nine years and the second time in two tries, the Harvard
heavyweights swept rival Yale in the 144th edition of the
Harvard-Yale Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Thames River.
The Crimson won the varsity eight, junior varsity and freshman
eight races Saturday after earning a nine-second win in the
combination race Friday night. It was the 40th win for Harry
Parker, the Stone Family Head Coach for Harvard Crew in the varsity
eight. The win also gives the Crimson a 90-54 lead in the all-time
series.
Harvard, who has won nine of the last 10 races and 22 of the last
25 against its archrival, finish the season with a 7-0 dual racing
record. Harvard won all five cup races this season – Adams,
Compton, Stein, Smith and Sexton Cup -- for the first time since
2005.
Harvard's completed the sweep of Yale with a commanding 20
second victory in the four mile varsity race. The Crimson rowed out
to a two and a half length lead at the first mile marker and did
not take its foot off the accelerator until the finish at the Gold
Star Bridge. The varsity boat was powered by three seniors, juniors
and sophomores who remained calm under tough rowing conditions that
featured a strong headwind. The Crimson crossed the finish line
with a time of 21:25.6, while the Bulldogs finished with a time of
21:45.1.
The nine members of the varsity eight, who gave Parker his 20th
undefeated season, were seniors Simon Gawlik, Henrik Rummel and
James Bayley, juniors Noah Bruegmann, Blake Pucsek and Richard
Anderson and sophomores David Wakulich, Anthony Locke and Chris
Kingston.
In the three mile junior varsity race, Harvard held on for the win
in dramatic fashion. After one mile of competition, The Crimson
oared out to a one and a half length lead and extended its
advantage to more than two boat lengths at the two-mile marker.
Yale would not go down without a fight as they stroked deep into
the Thames River to edge back into contention with one mile
remaining in the race. A strong sprint allowed the Bulldogs to walk
into the Crimson boat, but Harvard held on for the victory as they
crossed the finish line two seconds ahead of the Elis with a time
of 16:16.9. The Bulldogs pulled in with a time of 16:19.1. The
Crimson won the F. Valentine Chappell Trophy for the 11 times in
the past 13 years.
The Harvard rookies rowed to a convincing win in the first event
of the day with an eight second margin over their Yale
counterparts. Any chance for a Yale comeback was laid to rest when
the three seat of the Yale boat caught a crab 2,000 meters into the
race. This unfortunate event allowed the Crimson to row out to a
two length lead which they would not surrender. Harvard finished
with a time of 10:44.2 and Yale clocked in with a time of 10:52.2,
giving the Yardlings its eight in the last 10 races and 20 of the
past 25.
The freshmen boat was coxed by Alex Sopko, while Pat Lapage, Jack
Morrissey, Nick Jordan, Robert Stone, Michael DiSanto, Matthew
Edstein, Elihu Reynolds and Sam O'Connor rowed.
