Lyndsey Fry picked up two second-period goals against New Hampshire Thursday (Gil Talbot).
DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman Lyndsey Fry's first two goals of her career proved to be the difference as the Harvard women's ice hockey team took down New Hampshire 3-1 Thursday night at the Whittemore Center. The win is Harvard's (5-5-2, 4-2-2 ECAC) first at New Hampshire (8-10-0, 2-7-0 Hockey East) since the 2003-04 season.
The Wildcats drew first blood for the 11th time this season, taking a 1-0 lead at the 10:50 mark of the first period. Kristina Lavoie snuck behind the Crimson back line, corralled a pass from Kristine Horn and bested Harvard goalie Laura Bellamy in the one-on-one showdown. The hosts killed off the first penalty of the game but Harvard struck back when the second Wildcat was sent to the box. Kate Buesser hit Leanna Coskren with a pass at the blueline, Coskren slid the puck down the line to Josephine Pucci who buried a one-timer top shelf at 3:44 to knot the score at 1-1. The goal marks Pucci's second power-play blueline slapshot goal in as many games.
Penalties were the story of the second stanza and the Crimson took advantage of two four-on-four opportunities. Freshman Marissa Gedman stripped a puck deep in the Harvard zone and Lyndsey Fry picked up the loose puck, went the length of the ice and jammed home her first career tally at 12:39 of the second. On the second four-on-four situation of the period, Jillian Dempsey jumped on a loose puck in the UNH zone and fired on net. The rebound ricocheted off Wildcat goalie Lindsey Minton and Fry batted it out of the air for her second goal of the period. Harvard outshot UNH 16-3 in the frame.
The Crimson defense went into lockdown mode in the final stanza, holding the Wildcats to just four shots on goal for the entire period. The Crimson was unable to capitalize on a third four-on-four opportunity, but its offensive output through the first two periods proved to be enough to seal the 3-1 win.
Bellamy needed just 13 saves to notch her fourth win of the season while her counterpart Minton stopped 29 shots on the night. Harvard moves to 4-1 on the season in games decided by two goals.
The Crimson wraps up the 2010 portion of its schedule tomorrow night as it welcomes local Hockey East foe No. 4/5 Boston University to Bright Hockey Center for a 7 p.m., showdown.
