Head Coach Tommy Amaker
Tommy Amaker (Duke '87) begins his third season as head
coach of the Harvard men's basketball team. He registered his
200th career coaching victory Nov. 13 in the 2009-10 season opener
at Holy Cross.
He brings a 214-179 career head coaching record into the game,
including a 109-83 record at Michigan at a 68-55 record at Seton
Hall.
Amaker came to Harvard after a six year stint as Michigan's
head coach. Inheriting a program that was reeling from
institutional and NCAA sanctions, he led the Wolverines to the
postseason three times, winning the 2004 NIT title, reaching the
championship game of the 2006 NIT, and advancing to the second
round of the 2007 tournament. The 2006-07 season was
Michigan's second straight 20-win campaign and its third in
four years. The Wolverines were ranked as high as No. 20 in the
nation during the 2005-06 season.
The Yale Series
Yale leads the series by a count of 112-66 and had taken seven
straight meetings until Harvard ended the long drought with a win
in New Haven, Conn. in the final game of last season.
The Last Meeting With Yale
Harvard defeated Yale 69-59 to end a seven-game drought as well as
a nine-year losing streak at the Lee Amphitheater. Oliver McNally
scored 16 points off the bench after replacing starting guard
Andrew Pusar '09, who was injured in the game's first
minute of play.
Yale led 36-35 but McNally hit a 3-pointer and Harvard never
trailed again. The Crimson used a 13-4 run midway through the
second half to break the game open.
The Brown Series
In a series that dates back to 1900-01 Harvard holds an 86-74 edge
versus Brown in head-to-head competition. Brown managed a season
sweep of the Crimson in each of the last two seasons.
The Last Meeting With Brown
Garrett Leffelman hit a 3-pointer as time expired to lift Brown to
a 61-59 win in Providence, R.I. Harvard led 59-58 when Drew Housman
'09 missed a jumper with eight seconds left. Peter Sullivan
rebounded and passed to Leffelman, who made the game-winning
3-pointer -- his only one after five misses -- from the right
sideline in front of the Brown bench.
Another Notable under Amaker
With its win against Penn on Saturday, Harvard reached the 15-win
mark for the first time in 13 years since winning 17 back in
1996-97.
Penn-In A “W”
Harvard's win against the Quakers gave the Crimson wins over
Penn in three consecutive seasons, marking the first such
occurrence since 1985-88.
New Look
With his team battling injury problems last weekend, coach Amaker
showed some good coaching moves by shaking up the starting 5. New
to the group were Kyle Casey, Brandyn Curry and Max Kenyi - who
returned to the lineup after injuring himself on Nov. 23.
Casey wound up being the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Kenyi
pulled down a career-high seven rebounds against Penn and Curry had
nine points, six assists and three steals versus the Quakers.
Bull's-eye
Last weekend, sophomore Oliver McNally shot 70 percent from long
range over the weekend (7-10) and 67 percent overall in averaging
13.0 ppg.
Under Pressure
Harvard's defense forced Penn's Zack Rosen into eight
turnovers last Saturday.
Hot Shots
Harvard's win at Columbia win saw the Crimson shoot 50
percent for the game for the ninth time this season. The Crimson is
9-0 when reaching that lofty mark. Against Columbia, Harvard hit on
50 percent of all its shots in both halves, including
3-pointers.
First Half, Second Half
Jeremy Lin scored 13 first half points and Brandyn Curry 13 second
half points in a win at Columbia on 1/29. The 13 points represent a
career-high for Curry.
Fresh Faces
Four of Harvard's freshmen have scored in double figures
this season:
Christian Webster -8
Kyle Casey - 6
Dee Giger - 4
Brandyn Curry - 1
One For The Road
Prior to its 74-45 win at Columbia this season, Harvard's
last Ivy road win on a Friday night during travel weekends was
March 2, 2007 at Cornell (85-79).
