CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-No. 10 Cornell scored two
goals 25 seconds apart in the second period and got 14 saves from
Ben Scrivens in the third before adding an empty-net goal in a 3-0
win against the Harvard men's hockey team Friday night at sold-out
Bright Hockey Center.
Tyler Roeszler and Keir Ross scored the quick pair of goals in
the second for the Big Red (16-7-3, 13-4-2 ECAC Hockey, 6-3-0 Ivy
League). Kyle Richter made 19 of his 23 saves in the first two
periods to give Harvard (7-16-3, 7-9-3, 4-5-1) the chance to rally.
The Crimson held a 14-5 edge in third period shots but could not
solve Scrivens before Blake Gallagher sealed the win with his
empty-net tally 21.6 seconds before the final buzzer.
Neither team scored in the opening period, despite consecutive
Cornell power plays. Richter made six of his 11 first-period saves
during those two Harvard penalty kills, but his best stop may have
been on an even-strength Blake Gallagher one-timer from the slot
with about four minutes left in the frame. Scrivens stopped six
Crimson shots, highlighted by a nice right-toe save on a deflected
Doug Rogers wrister on the game's first shift.
The Big Red killed two penalties early in the second period and
then grabbed the lead and quickly doubled it. Roeszler had the
first goal on a shot from the slot following a pass out of the
corner by Nick D'Agostino. Ross tapped in the second from in front
off a Riley Nash pass.
Harvard came out hitting hard and getting the puck to the net in
the third period, but Scrivens was up to the challenge. He survived
more than a minute of six-on-five play after the Crimson pulled
Richter for an extra attacker.
