POTSDAM, N.Y.-Andrew Himelson scored in
overtime to lift Clarkson to a 2-1 win against the Harvard men's
hockey team Friday night at Cheel Arena.
After the Clarkson defense withstood some pressure from the
Crimson (7-18-3, 7-11-3 ECAC Hockey) early in overtime, Himelson
one-timed in a Matt Beca pass out of the corner at 3:11 to lift the
Golden Knights (8-22-3, 4-15-2) to the win. Karpowich finished with
20 saves, while Harvard's Ryan Carroll made 21. Doug Rogers scored
for the Crimson.
The Crimson maintained its edge in the race for a home
playoff series next weekend, as competitors Brown and Princeton
both lost.
Harvard dominated territorially in the first period but had only
six shots and no goals to show for it, while limiting the Golden
Knights to four shots. The Crimson's best chance came off the stick
of a falling Pier-Olivier Michaud from the left side, but Karpowich
made a pad save and Harvard could not convert on the power play
after Michaud was pulled down.
The teams played another scoreless stanza in the second.
Clarkson held a 9-5 shots edge, with five of those chances coming
during one power play. Carroll continued his strong play in the
Harvard net, and Karpowich made his best stop on Luke Greiner. The
CU netminder got his left arm on Greiner's shot from the left side
on the rush.
The offense picked up quickly in the third period. Rogers got
the Crimson on the board just 49 seconds into the frame, taking
advantage of a neutral-zone turnover by the Golden Knights and
wristing a shot over the blocker of Karpowich. Clarkson tied the
score just 11 seconds later when Louke Oakley put the puck into an
open net following a bad bounce for Harvard behind its own net. The
goalies again took over from there, with Carrroll making key stops
on Beca on a wraparound attempt and a breakaway.
