CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
The 12th-ranked Harvard men's
lacrosse team rolled to a season-opening victory over visiting
Canisius College Saturday afternoon at Cumnock Turf by a score of
16-6.
Harvard (1-0) scored the first three goals before Canisius got
two back to end the first quarter. Harvard then blew the game open
early in the second with four straight goals including three
tallies in a span of just 21 seconds. By halftime, the Crimson led
9-3 en route to an 11-3 lead early in the third and a 15-3
advantage by the end of the third.
Dean Gibbons set a personal best with five goals on six shots
while Jeff Cohen had three goals and an assist. Kevin Vaughn had
two goals; six others scored and five more logged assists as 14
total Harvard players recorded points on the day.
Christian Oberbeck won 9-of-12 faceoffs and had four ground
balls while Jeff Molinari had a game-high five ground balls. Andrew
Parchman also had a good day on faceoffs with a 7-for-8 mark.
In goal, Christian Coates earned the victory with 11 saves in 45
minutes with four goals against before giving way to Harry Krieger.
Canisius was led by Mike Benzinger and Adam Jones with two goals
apiece.
All told, Harvard won 20 of the 25 faceoffs.
