CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The sixth-ranked Harvard
women's hockey team, which scored three power-play goals,
withstood a late surge by Yale, earning a 4-3 win against the
Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Bright Hockey Center. On Senior Day,
four Harvard players chipped in with a goal, as Randi Griffin,
Jillian Dempsey, Leanna Coskren and Kaitlin Spurling lit the lamp.
Laura Bellamy made 15 saves, while Kylie Stephens recorded three
stops to combine for the victory in net.
Harvard, which improves to 15-5-4 overall, 11-5-2 in ECAC Hockey
and 6-2-2 in Ivy League action, earned a 5-on-3 power play late in
the first period. The Crimson capitalized, as Griffin deflected a
slap shot by Cori Bassett through Yale goaltender Jackee
Snikeris's legs at 19:39. Kathryn Farni was credited with the
secondary assist on the play after grabbing control of a loose puck
and swinging a pass to Bassett.
The Crimson opened the second period with another power-play
tally, as Dempsey tipped in a rebound in front at 0:39. Kelsey
Romatoski sent a pass in front and Liza Ryabkina placed a shot on
goal. Dempsey corralled the puck and knocked it home, putting
Harvard ahead, 2-1. After Yale (9-13-3, 7-10-1, 1-5-1) netted a
power-play goal of its own at 3:39, Coskren notched Harvard's
next goal, also on a power play at 10:59. Buesser and Bassett
earned assists on the third Crimson goal. Harvard continued its
offensive surge at 13:36, as Spurling knocked in a one-timer after
receiving a cross-ice pass from Romatoski, making it 4-1.
In the third, Bray Ketchum cut Harvard's lead to 4-2, as she
found the back of the net at 15:41. With time winding down, Yale
pulled Snikeris, giving the Bulldogs an extra skater. Yale
capitalized, as Samantha MacLean made it a one-goal game at 18:58.
The Bulldogs managed two more shots in the third, but both were
blocked as Harvard held on for the win.
Following the game, Bassett, Kathryn Farni, Grffin, Christina
Kessler and Anna McDonald were honored for their playing careers at
Harvard, including a video board presentation.
Harvard will return to action by hosting Northeastern in the
championship game of the Beanpot Tuesday, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m.
