NEW HAVEN, Conn.--No. 8 Yale scored four
third-period goals to pull away to a 6-3 win after the Harvard
men's hockey team came back from two goals down to tie the game
Saturday afternoon at sold-out Ingalls Rink.
Ryan Carroll made 41 saves for Harvard (6-12-3, 6-7-3 ECAC
Hockey, 4-4-1 Ivy League), which got goals from Chris Huxley, Alex
Killorn and Ryan Grimshaw and assists by six different players.
Billy Blaise logged 20 saves, as the Bulldogs (14-6-3, 9-5-2,
6-2-0) scored three times on four power-play chances and held a
47-23 shots advantage. The Crimson was 1 for 6 on the power play.
The Crimson created good offensive-zone pressure in the opening
minutes, but Yale turned the tide toward the middle of the first
period. The Bulldogs got on the board first, about nine minutes in,
with Jeff Anderson putting in a rebound on the rush. The Bulldogs
doubled their lead with a power-play goal on Kevin Peel's slap shot
from the point at 13:40.
Huxley halved the Elis' lead with a power-play tally at 13:40 of
the second period. Brothers Michael and Danny Biega worked the puck
to Huxley at the blue line, and his slapper from the center of
point found its way through traffic and past Blaise. The Crimson
held a 9-8 edge in second-period shots.
Killorn tied the game just 22 seconds into the third period,
taking a drop pass from Louis Leblanc during four-on-four play and
tucking a shot past Blaise from the left side. Chad Morin also
assisted on the tally. Harvard had four of the first five shots in
the period, but the sixth belonged to Yale's Brendan Mason, who
scored a power-play goal to give the Bulldogs back the lead.
Harvard was whistled for two penalties 11 seconds apart shortly
after the goal. Tom Dignard took advantage with a five-on-three
goal.
Brian O'Neill later made it 5-2 by converting a breakaway after
a long pass from Mark Arcobello, but Grimshaw answered less than
two minutes later. Grimshaw scored from a tough angle deep on the
right side with Michael Del Mauro and Rence Coassin assisting.
Coassin picked up his first career point. Sean Backman sealed the
win for Yale with a shorthanded goal into an empty net in the final
minute.
