CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard softball team managed
to score four runs in both games of a doubleheader against Boston
College but the Eagles were able to sneak past the Crimson in
both games, registering 5-4 and 6-4 wins Thursday afternoon.
Harvard drops to 15-18 on the season while BC improves to 12-22 on
the year.
In game one, both pitchers were able to stymie offensive efforts
through the first four innings, keeping the score at 0-0 entering
the bottom of the fifth. After an Emily Henderson walk and an Ellen Macadam single, Whitney Shaw drilled a 3-2 pitch over the leftfield
wall to give the Crimson a 3-0 lead. Jessica Ferri followed with a
solo shot to center to give Harvard a 4-0 lead after five. The
Eagles answered right back with five of their own in the top of the
sixth, thanks in large part to an Ali Lynette-Krech bases-loaded
double. Taylor Peyton shut down the Crimson in the final two
innings to earn the win for BC.
Shaw finished the game 2 for 3 with three RBI while Ellen
Macadam registered three hits in the game. Rachel Brown pitched
five innings of scoreless ball, striking out six and scattering two
hits.
An Amy Tunstall double helped the guests out to a 2-0 lead to
start game two but Harvard was able to tie the score in the second
thanks to some heads-up base running. The Eagles regained the lead
with a run in the third and tacked on three more in the fourth
thanks to a Renee Ramos two-RBI double. Macadam knocked an RBI
single to left-center in the fourth and the Shaw drove an RBI
double to center in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell
short as BC hung on for the sweep.
Jessica Pledger registered two hits in the second game while
Shaw notched another RBI. Mari Zumbro pitched three innings of
effective relief, scattering two hits and not allowing a run.
Allison Gage picked up the win for BC.
The Crimson is back in action Saturday as it returns to
conference action with two doubleheaders against Ivy North rival
Brown. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 12:30 p.m.
