BEIJING—Members of the Harvard
lightweight crew dominated a field of three other prestigious
rowing programs in the first of two races on a summer trip to China
Sunday on the Shunyi Olympic Basin.
The Crimson won by 16.2 seconds against Ivy League rival Yale as
well as Oxford University and Cambridge University of England on
the course used for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The team has been
training there since Friday and will fly to Chengdu City, in the
Sichuan province, for another race next weekend.
After winning by nearly a length in a heat to determine lane
assignments, the Crimson, racing in Lane 3, posted a victorious
time of 6:01.5. Yale was a distant second in 6:17.7, while Oxford
edged Cambridge by 2.2 seconds with a third-place time of
6:28.0.
Representing Harvard in China are coxswain Dexter Louie
'10, senior stroke Will Newell, junior Austin Meyer, junior
Tim Moore, Martin Eirmann '10, sophomore Florian Mayr, senior
Andrew Trott, senior Tyler Caldwell and sophomore bowman Erich
Schultze. Senior Sean Duncan is training with the squad as an
alternate.
