STORRS, Conn. – Despite being outshot,
25-6, the sixth-ranked Harvard men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw
at No. 10 Connecticut Saturday evening. With the tie, the
Crimson remains unbeaten at 2-0-1 on the season, while the Huskies
move to 3-0-1.
Midway through a physical and competitive first half, Zack
Wolfenzon broke a scoreless tie by placing a shot over UConn
goalkeeper Josh Ford and into the top left corner of the net.
Tim Linden and
Jamie Rees
earned assists on the play as Harvard went ahead, 1-0, at
18:00.
The Huskies had the next eight shots before scoring on a penalty
kick after a handball call in the Crimson box at 43:05.
Stephane Diop lined up and beat Harvard's Austin Harms with a
shot, tying the game just before halftime. At the midway
point, UConn led in shots, 11-2, and earned all three corner kicks
of the first half.
In the 63rd minute, Harvard withstood a surge by the Huskies, as
the Crimson defense blocked a shot by Tony Cascio, and moments
later, Mamadou Diouf saw his shot from the top of the box hit the
post. Late in the second, Harvard's Richard Smith
headed a shot on net after a corner kick, but Ford was there to
make the save and preserve the 1-1 score.
In the first extra session, Brian Rogers nearly
ended the game in favor of the Crimson, but his try from the top of
the box hit the crossbar at 93:37.
Harms finished the game with three saves, while Ford also
recorded three stops. UConn had nine corner kicks, compared
to one for the Crimson.
Up next, Harvard will travel to New Mexico for two games,
beginning with a showdown against No. 24 UC Santa Barbara Friday,
Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. EST.
