Mass. – Highlighted by
gold medals by freshman Peregrine
Badger in the epee and sophomore Eric
Arzoian with the saber, the sixth-ranked Harvard men's
fencing team brought home a total of three medals and seven top-10
finishes at the NCAA Northeast Region championship Sunday at Boston
College.
Badger finished in the top-spot in the epee competition in
front of Nicholas Vomero of St. John's and teammate Michael
Raynis, who took second and third, respectively. Senior captain
James
Hawrot also had a solid showing coming in fifth in the epee
field.
In the saber it was Arzoian that stood atop of the podium
at the end of the day as he bested Marty Williams of Sacred Heart
and Alejandro Rojas of St. John's, who finished second and third
behind Arzoian. Teammate, senior Valentin
Staller, placed sixth, while junior Thomas Kolasa
also finished in the top-10, as he took eighth. Freshman Alexander
Ryjik came in just outside of the top-10 plateau in the field,
placing 12th.
Sophomore Lucas Lin was
Harvard's best entrant with the foil, as the White Plains, N.Y.,
native finished in fifth place. Freshman Brian Kanshige nearly
cracked the top-10 when he placed 12th while junior Thomas
Snell finished the day 23rd.
Selections for the NCAA Championship March 24-25 in
Columbus, Ohio, will be finalized Tuesday.
