Each week, GoCrimson.com will take an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the members of the Harvard women's hockey team. This week features sophomore forward, Jessica Harvey. (Gil Talbot)
Why did you choose Harvard?
I chose Harvard because, well, it's Harvard. The combination of the best academics and the best hockey was something that I just couldn't pass up and every day I am grateful for this opportunity and for my HH family.
Whom do you model your game after, and why?
I played boys hockey until senior year of high school so I think that I was really influenced by them. Guy's hockey definitely taught me to keep my head up and play physical.
Is there any significance as to why you wear your number? If so, what?
I wear number 21 because it was Cammie Granato's number. She was such a great player and captain. I don't remember too much from watching the 1998 Olympics but I was glued to the TV watching women's hockey in Salt Lake and just fell in love with her and team USA.
What's your favorite pregame meal?
My favorite pregame meal is probably chicken parm or some sort of chicken and pasta combo from the DHall. Like Sami (Reber), I always top it off with a bowl of Cocoa Krispies.
Do you have any superstitions before getting on the ice?
There are a lot of little things that I do but the biggest one is that I always put my left equipment on before my right. (left skate, then right skate, etc.) If I do it wrong I have to take whatever it is off and start over.
What/who are you listening to pregame, and why?
I like to take it back to the days of varsity hockey in high school and whatever the guys would listen to. Mostly Linkin Park, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, and a bunch of one-hit wonders.
What's the best part about road trips during the season?
I like road trips because we get a break from campus and kind of get to be in our own little world for the weekend. Everyone else hates it, but I love the trek up to the North Country to play Clarkson and St. Lawrence, because that's where I'm from. We go to my house for a team dinner and my family and friends get to come watch the games. There is also a lot of ragging on me for my "hick" background all weekend long.
What other Harvard team do you enjoy watching as a fan?
I love going to watch softball and basketball. They are so supportive of us and come to a lot of our games so it is fun to go watch and return the support.
If you could travel back in time, when/where would you go?
I would travel back to the Colonial days. As a history concentrator, I love learning about what life was like back then and so much of our countries most important history happened then.
If you could have a superpower, which one would you chose?
I would choose teleportation so that I could visit my family and explore the world.
