Personal Bests Highlights Day Two For Track and Field at Armory Invitational

Harvard will be back in action at the annual HYP next weekend (Harvard Athletic Communications).

NEW YORK –
The Harvard track and field teams wrapped up their two-day stay at the Armory Collegiate Invitational Saturday with a number of Crimson student-athletes competing in event finals. With more than 100 schools represented, the meet is the largest regular-season collegiate indoor competition in the country.

Harvard's women's 4x400 ran the third fastest time in school history, taking on some of the nation's best quartets in the championship competition. Erika Veidis, Gabrielle Scott, Olivia Abbate and Autumne Franklin teamed for a time of 3:44.65, just the third crew to eclipse the 3:45.00 mark in the event in team history.

The women's distance crew posted two personal bests in the 3,000. Morgan Kelly led the way for Harvard with a personal-best time of 9:48.99, good for seventh overall, while Alaina Alvarez finished 13th, just breaking the 10-minute mark at 9:59.61. Molly Renfer and Erika Veidis finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in the 800, both recording Harvard all-time top-10 marks. Renfer's mark of 2:09.39 is the seventh-fastest in school history and Veidis' time of 2:09.78 is good for ninth in team annals.

Nico Weiler matched his indoor personal best and school record in the pole vault, taking fourth in the competition with a clearance of 5.30m (17' 4.75"). Jeff Homer led a trio of Harvard runners in the 800, finishing seventh in the championship race in a time of 1:52.44.  Jonathan Sparks' clearance of 1.99m (6' 6.25") in the high jump earned him a fourth-place finish in the Eastern event.

Up next for the Crimson is the annual HYP meet, held this year in Princeton, N.J. It is Harvard's final indoor competition before hosting Heps Feb. 23-24.
