Igor Liokumovich took the College Men's Shot Put Eastern title at the Penn Relays (Gil Talbot).
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In its final weekend before the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, the Harvard track and field team sent competitors to the Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday, and the Brown Invitational Sunday.
Adabelle Ekechukwu kicked off Harvard's stay at the Penn Relays with a mark of 55.91(183'5") in the weight throw, and Shannon Watt led the Crimson in the shot put with a distance of 13.31 (43'8"). Mary Hirst matched her outdoor personal best in the high jump Friday with a clearance of 1.76 (5'9.25") and Igor Liokumovich set a new personal best in the discus with a throw of 52.87 (173'5"), good for fifth all-time in team history. Liokumovich also claimed the College Men's Shot Put Eastern title, posting a mark of 17.19 (56'4.75"), nearly a meter beyond the nearest competitor.
With the bulk of the throwers competing at the Penn Relays, a number of runners took to the track at the Brown Invitational Sunday in Providence. Rookie Paige Kouba turned in a time worthy of the Harvard all-time list in the 800, finishing second with a time of 2:14.64. Jen Guidera took second in the 3,000, crossing the line in 10:05.07, and Ann Giebelhaus neared her personal best mark in the high jump at 1.65 (5'5") and was joined by freshman Allison Morrison at that height. Rookie Megan McHugh had a stellar showing in the javelin, posting the fifth-best mark in school history at 43.88 (143'11.5"), good for the win Sunday.
On the men's side, Jared Kadich had the top collegiate time in the 200, crossing the line in 22.18 to lead a trio of Harvard runners in the event. Kadich was also the top collegiate runner in the 400, finishing in 49.81. The 800 had a Crimson hue to it as the top five finishers in the race hailed from Harvard, fronted by Connor Reck with a winning time of 1:54.27. Jarvis Harris picked up yet another 110 hurdles victory, breezing to the win in 14.24.
The focus now turns to the Heptagonal Championships, which will take place next weekend in Princeton, N.J.
