The Harvard women finished sixth Sunday, and second among Ivy schools (Harvard Athletic Communications).
PRINCETON, NJ. – The Harvard women's track and field team posted its best result at the ECAC Championships in team history as the Crimson wrapped up its stay at the ECAC/IC4A Championships Sunday. The women's team compiled 36 points to tie for sixth at the meet, the second-highest finish by an Ivy League school at the event. The men earned 19 points on the weekend, good for a 16th-place result.
Gabrielle Scott kick-started the women's efforts with yet another personal best in the 400. After posting a time of 54.54 to qualify sixth in Saturday's prelims, Scott ran a time of 54.59 in the event finals, good for sixth overall and three team points. Her time stands as the second-fastest ever by a Harvard female in the 400. Senior Sammy Silva followed suit in a big way in the 1,500, placing second in the event with a new personal best of 4:24.98. The time stands as the second-best mark in school history, and brought eight more points to the Crimson. Silva was just .29 seconds back of the race winner Sunday.
After breaking the school record in Saturday's preliminary round, the women's 4x400 relay team followed with a strong showing in the finals, running a time of 3:38.98, good for fourth in the race and five points towards the team score. Senior Mary Hirst continued her presence atop the high jump leaderboard, earning four points in a fifth-place finish, clearing 1.76 meters (5'9.25") Sunday.
The men had a presence in the field events Sunday, highlighted by a pair of scoring athletes in the shot put. Sophomore Ben Glauser led the Harvard contingent with a third-place finish, posting a mark of 17.17 (56'4"), good for six points. Classmate Igor Liokumovich chipped in two more with a seventh-place distance of 16.98 (55'8.5").
Harvard will take the next weekend off from competition and then focus its sights on the NCAA Preliminary Round, which will take place in Greensboro, N.C.
