GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Harvard track and field team completed its final day at the 2013 NCAA East Preliminary meet Saturday as the Crimson had participants in five events.
Sophomore Malcolm Mason Rodriguez kicked off the day for Harvard, competing in the triple jump. His best distance came on his third and final attempt of the day, posting a mark of 14.91m (48'11"), good for 25th overall in the field. Ben Glauser was Harvard's only other field athlete competing on the day, but the sophomore was unable to record a mark in the men's hammer event.
Morgan Kelly was Harvard's first runner competing on the day, representing the Crimson in the 5,000. The junior ran a time of 16:36.45, good for 10th in her heat and 22nd overall to just miss qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the race. A trio of men took to the track for the 5,000 and junior James Leakos led the group with a time of 14:24.01, good for 21st in the overall standings. Rookie Tom Purnell was close behind at 14:24.56 and junior Maksim Korolev, who qualified for nationals in the 10,000 Thursday, posted a time of 14:28.62 to round out the group.
The women's 4x400 relay was the final competition for Harvard Saturday and the group of Autumne Franklin, Christi Scott, Olivia Abbate and Gabrielle Scott teamed for a time of 3:39.26, good for 18th in the competition.
In all, Harvard saw four student-athletes book tickets to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8. Korolev will represent the Crimson in the 10,000, junior Dustin Brode will compete in the shot put, Franklin qualified in the 400 hurdles and senior Mary Hirst earned a spot in the national high jump finals.
