Nick
Easton was one of nine Crimson players named to the All-Ivy
League first team (Gil Talbot).
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – After completing a
perfect 10-0 season and earning the 16th Ivy League title in
program history, the Harvard football team has earned 18 selections
to the All-Ivy League team, the conference office announced
Tuesday.
In addition, Tim Murphy, The Thomas Stephenson Family Head Coach
for Harvard Football, received the league's inaugural Coach of the
Year Award, helping Harvard win its eighth conference crown since
he arrived in Cambridge in 1994. Harvard's perfect season was also
the third for Murphy since 2001.
The Crimson cruised to a 7-0 mark in league play for the sixth
time, all under Murphy. Harvard also established a new program
record by defeating Yale for the eighth-straight season. In
addition, the Crimson continues to carry the nation's best record
in the FCS since 2001, going 114-25 (.820), which also stands tied
for second in all of Division I during the same timeframe. Harvard
has won seven or more games in 14-straight seasons, an Ivy League
record, and has scored in 168-consecutive games, establishing a new
conference record in that category as well.
The Crimson had nine honorees on the all-conference first team:
senior offensive lineman Nick Easton, junior offensive
lineman Cole
Toner, junior running back Paul Stanton,
Jr., senior tight end Tyler Hamblin,
senior defensive end Zack Hodges,
senior defensive tackle Obum Obukwelu,
senior linebacker Connor
Sheehan, junior defensive back Sean Ahern and
senior defensive back Norman Hayes.
Stanton, Hodges and Hayes were all unanimous choices to the first
team.
The Ivy League will announce finalists for its Offensive and
Defensive Player of the Year awards on Tuesday, Dec. 2.
On the second team, sophomore tight end Anthony
Firkser, junior wide receiver Andrew Fischer
and junior linebackers Eric Medes and Jacob
Lindsey earned recognition.
Seniors Anthony
Fabiano and Michael
Mancinelli and junior Adam Redmond
earned All-Ivy honorable mention as the entire Harvard offensive
line was tabbed to the all-conference squad. Junior defensive end
James
Duberg and junior defensive back Chris Evans
rounded out Harvard's selections for honorable mention.
Starting at center, Easton, a native of Lenoir, North Carolina,
started all 10 games this season and helped Harvard rank among the
nation's best in several statistical categories, including 15th in
rushing offense (230.5 yards per game) and 19th in completion
percentage (.643). Easton was also a first team All-Ivy choice in
2013.
Toner, who hails from Greenwood, Indiana, also saw action in all
10 games and helped the Crimson average 32.7 points per game this
fall.
Stanton, an All-Ivy second teamer last fall, rushed for 990
yards and 11 touchdowns this season, moving to fourth in school
history with 27 career rushing touchdowns. He ranked second in the
Ancient Eight in rushing yards, despite missing two games because
of injury. A product of Kenner, Louisiana, Stanton averaged 123.8
yards per game overall and enjoyed a career-day at Penn Nov. 15,
running for a career-best 235 yards and three TDs. The 235 yards
marked the third-most in a game in school history.
Despite missing four games because of injury, Hamblin, a native
of Syracuse, New York, rounded out Harvard's list of players on
offense to earn All-Ivy first team accolades. Hamblin finished with
11 catches for 176 yards and scored a key 28-yard touchdown in the
win at Penn, which clinched the Ivy title for the Crimson.
On the defensive side of the ball, Hodges, who hails from
Atlanta, Georgia, earns his third nod to the All-Ivy first team.
Last year's recipient of the Asa S. Bushnell Cup as Ivy Defensive
Player of the Year, Hodges is also this year's winner of the George
"Bulger" Lowe Award, presented to the top defensive player in New
England. He played in all 10 games this fall and recorded an Ivy
League-best 8.5 sacks. He finished the year with 26 tackles and
10.0 stops for a loss, including 2.0 sacks in the win over Yale in
The Game. Hodges will graduate as Harvard's all-time sack leader
with 27.0.
Obukwelu, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, recorded a
career-high 38 tackles in 2014. He made 3.0 sacks and 4.5 tackles
for a loss, including 3.0 in the victory at Dartmouth Nov. 1.
Harvard's career and season leader with three interception
returns for touchdowns, Sheehan, a product of Austin, Texas,
amassed 56 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss this year. Against
Columbia Nov. 8, Sheehan returned two picks for scores (49, 48
yards), tying the Harvard career, season and game records that
afternoon. In The Game, Sheehan broke the record with a 90-yard
return after making an interception, helping the Crimson top Yale
for the eighth-straight season.
Ahern, a junior from Cincinnati, Ohio, ranked fifth on the
Crimson with 51 tackles and led the squad with 37 solo stops to
earn his first nod to the All-Ivy squad.
Hayes, Harvard's 141st captain, picks up his third selection to
the All-Ivy team after finishing the season with 45 tackles.
Against Yale, Hayes, a native of Tucker, Georgia, recorded a
Harvard season-high 13 stops in the Crimson's 31-24 victory at
Harvard Stadium.
A sophomore from Manalapan, New Jersey, Firkser was second on
the Crimson with 32 receptions and 485 yards, while tying for the
team lead with four touchdowns. In Harvard's 49-7 win at Princeton
Oct. 25, Firkser made seven grabs for 86 yards and a TD.
Fischer, who hails from Diamond Bar, California, had 55 catches
for 677 yards and four touchdowns. His 55 catches were sixth most
in a season in school history, and he now ranks 13th in program
history with 87 catches for 1,026.yards. Fischer, who also handled
much of the kick and punt return duties, averaged 129.8 all-purpose
yards. He also scored two touchdowns against Yale, including the
game-winner with 55 seconds left.
A linebacker from Cleves, Ohio, Lindsey led the Crimson with 63
tackles and finished with 3.5 tackles for a loss.
Medes, a native of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, recorded 61 tackles
and played a key role in Harvard's win over Holy Cross Sept. 19,
making eight stops and forcing and recovering a fumble.
Fabiano, who hails from Wakefield, Massachusetts, started all 10
games on the offensive line, as did Adam Redmond, a native of
Strongsville, Ohio. Mancinelli, a native of Denver, Colorado,
played in eight games and was tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic
All-District team.
Duberg, a product of Chula Vista, California, finished with 30
tackles, 4.5 tackles for a loss and 3.5 sacks. He led the Ivy
League with three forced fumbles, making two in the win at
Georgetown (Oct. 4) alone.
Evans, who played in all 10 games after making only one
appearance in 2013, finished with 43 tackles and nine pass
breakups. A native of Princeton Junction, New Jersey, Evans made an
interception in the win at Brown Sept. 27 and had a career-high
nine tackles, including 2.0 for a loss, at Penn.
The 2014 Ivy League Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year
awards (Asa S. Bushnell Cup) will be presented Monday, Dec. 8 at
the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
